Lenox Elementary Newsletter
Week of April 11th
Greetings Lenox Families/Saludos Familias Lenox
On Thursday, April 7th, we celebrated all the Perseverance, Respect, Integrity, Dependability, Enthusiasm, and Creativity Lenox Pioneers have been showing this last quarter. Check out all that we celebrated HERE! For our final quarter, our ! trait will be, Kindness. Kindness is defined as the quality of being friendly, generous, and considerate. But kindness means so much more. Kindness can mean different things to different people. The meaning is in how YOU choose to show and express it. Be it through empathy, acceptance, kind gestures, thoughtfulness, the possibilities are entirely up to you. What would happen if you committed to performing at least one act of kindness every day?
There are many things happening this month both in school and in our community; be sure to check out all of the details below. And, as a reminder, if you ever have questions, suggestions, or wonderings, please do not hesitate to reach out to your child's classroom teacher, the office or me. Communication and connection are key to our success!
Check out our instagram - hsdlenox and;

Volunteers
We appreciate the involvement of community members and parents who volunteer at Lenox. As the safety of students is of primary importance, the following procedures are required for processing volunteer requests.
- Complete the volunteer application on our website.
- The information you provide will be used to complete background checks through the state's criminal records system and the Oregon Department of Education's sexual misconduct database.
- Once these checks have cleared, you will receive an email asking you to complete a survey and upload proof of COVID-19 vaccination, per the Governor’s vaccination mandate.* (*Volunteers may fill out a form requesting a medical or religious exception; however, these will only be considered on an as-needed basis as staff availability allows. Anyone receiving an approved exception will be required to follow a set of increased safety measures when volunteering.)
- In addition, all volunteers will need to submit to a fingerprint-based criminal records check by March 28, 2022, in order to continue volunteering. Until this check is completed, volunteers will not be assigned duties that could put them in a situation where they have direct, unsupervised contact with students. If the check is not completed by March 28, 2022, your volunteer status will go from “approved” to “pending” and you will no longer be allowed to volunteer.
Earth Day Celebrations & Activities
Friday, April 22 marks the 52nd observance of Earth Day; and for hosting such an important event, April is considered Earth Month. This year’s theme is “Invest in Our Planet.” Join us as we celebrate our magnificent home.
There are so many things to think about when it comes to environmental sustainability that it can feel overwhelming. But the positive side of that is that there are a wide variety of ways to get involved and do your part. And every day provides a new opportunity to get started or expand your efforts. Each conservation action has an impact - the key is action. Small actions become new habits. New habits become contagious and soon these collective actions result in big change.
If you are searching for ideas, keep in mind that the most effective action - and the one you’re likely to stick with - comes from topics that interest you. Could you drive less, walk more, carpool, or ride a bike? Could you take your own reusable mug to your favorite coffee shop? Below are some other ideas to get those creative juices flowing.
Like to build?
- Consider making a waste sorting station. Waste disposal companies are very particular about the materials they receive. Invest in learning the basics of recycling programs in your area.
- If you don’t have the tools you need, invest in getting to know your neighbor or visit Hillsboro’s Library of Things to see if they have what you’re looking for.
- Consider reusing building materials you may already have at home.
Like to cook?
- Consider transitioning to plant-based menus, at least one or two nights a week.
- Food waste in the U.S. is at a severe level. Plan several meals around common ingredients and get creative in the kitchen to reduce spoilage and waste.
- Invest in composting bins to keep food waste out of the landfill. Many local haulers now accept food scraps along with yard debris.
