GHS Family Hustle
6.2.22
~ From the Desk of Todd Willems
It’s June! Once again we find ourselves feeling the rhythms that come with the end of a school year - Senior pranks, scholarship and awards ceremony, graduation planning, and so much more. It’s good to have these things back once again, and to have them feel just a bit more normal than they have over the past two years.
While this has still been a year impacted by the continual presence of the pandemic, it has been a successful school year in so many ways. Our school ACT scores increased, our JROTC program was recognized as the Greenfield Community Service Group of the Year, we saw the return of drama and musicals in our auditorium with Clue and Little Shop of Horrors. We saw athletic successes and musical accomplishments. We saw smiles in the hallways and students working hard in classrooms.
To our seniors, and their families - Congratulations and good luck! You have had a high school experience unlike any other and have taken it on with a positive attitude and a full heart. Keep an eye on the announcements regarding graduation and we will see you at practice on June 10th (10:00am).
To the rest of our learning community - Good work this year! As summer knocks on the door, please take some time for fun. Among the sports and work schedules, find some time to engage with a book, or play some music, or run around with friends. Have fun, you deserve it.
Keep an eye out as we will start talking about school in the fall before too long- but for now, take a long, deep, well-deserved break!
It’s a great day to be a HAWK!
Best Regards,
Mr. Todd Willems, Principal

Prom Celebration
The Greenfield Prom was a huge success! On Saturday, May 7 at the Marcus Performing Arts Center in Milwaukee, 318 GHS students celebrated the Masquerade themed extravaganza. It is always a special moment when our students engage in moments that will last a lifetime, and it is always an honor to witness their special moments. A special thanks to all of you for being so supportive of our students to ensure a successful prom.
Our Prom Court was comprised of the following students:
Prom Court Attendants
Robert Schupert and Noelle Heinzel
Derrick Dretzka and Gia DeAnda
Piper Karow and Samuel Siepert
Prom Prince and Princess
Jahquan Redding and Kenzie Antonicci
Prom King and Queen
Omar Surveyor-Juarez and Courtney Schuk
Another huge thank you to Kristin Iselin, Eli King, Melinda Redlinger, Martin Volk, Taylor Wermund, Amanda Back, Lynn Misirian, Shannon Riddle, Teri Kovars, and Todd Willems. These faculty and staff members collaborated together in order to make sure that prom night was a safe and special event for our students.
A final thanks for all the local businesses that helped to support the GHS prom. Sazama's Fine Catering provided food, Music on the Move was our DJ, and School and Sport Pics provided the photography.
"Bring Light to Your Cause" Charity Walk
On May 13, over 175 Greenfield High School community members participated in the "Bring Light to Your Cause" Charity Walk. Because of these students’ hard work, passion, and community support awareness was raised within the community focusing on autism, suicide prevention, Alzheimer’s, and mental illness. Below is a breakdown of the charities supported, and the amount raised for each cause.
Autism Society of Southeastern Wisconsin $403
American Foundation for Suicide Prevention $338
NAMI $544

Summer learning loss
Have you noticed that at the beginning of every school year your child’s academic performance just isn’t at the same level as it was the previous May? This is a real issue that is known as “summer learning loss” or the “summer slide.” Studies suggest students, on average, display a decline of academic skills by 20-30%. This can be prevented with a few simple steps. First, encourage your student to participate in various summer programs to keep those literacy and STEM skills sharp throughout the summer. Participating in these programs can prepare your student for the future and maintain those skills that were developed throughout the school year. Another suggestion is to encourage your child to read throughout the summer. You can touch base with educators to seek suggestions as to which resources would be the most accessible, and don’t forget to encourage your students to pursue their passion as that will lead to more engagement during the summer months. Keeping your student engaged is the best way to curb that summer slide we encounter every September.
Apple Award
This year at GHS, Principal Willems introduced, “The Apple Award.” This special Apple is passed from one educator to another educator each month at our staff meeting. The teacher passing it on explains the influence the next recipient has had in the lives of students, families, and colleagues. It is a special time where we collectively celebrate one another. Past recipients of the award include, Mrs. Carothers, Mrs. Foxgrover, Mr. Chupp, Mrs. Sibley, Mrs. Schilz, Mr. King, Mr. Otto, Coach K., Mr. Sibley, Mrs. Redlinger and Ms. Hribar.

Four-Bean Marinated Salad
Submitted by Lisa Tachka, Para-Professional
Ingredients
- 1 (17-oz.) can lima beans, rinsed and drained
- 1 (16-oz) can cut green beans, rinsed and drained
- 1 (16-oz.) can cut wax beans, rinsed and drained
- 1 (16-oz.) can kidney beans, rinsed and drained
- 1 small green bell pepper, seeded and chopped
- 1 small onion, chopped
- 1 (2-oz.) jar diced pimiento, drained
- 3/4 cup sugar
- 1/2 cup vegetable oil
- 1/2 cup white vinegar
- 1/2 tsp salt
- 1/2 tsp pepper
Instructions:
Combine first 7 ingredients in a bowl; toss gently. Combine sugar and remaining 4 ingredients in a small saucepan; bring to a boil over low heat, stirring until sugar dissolves. Pour hot vinegar mixture over bean mixture; stir gently. Cover and chill at least 4 hours. Serve with a slotted spoon.
Yield: 8 to 10 servings
This salad recipe is a favorite go-to because it's made ahead. The longer it marinates the tastier it gets. It's safe for an outdoor setting with the vinegar & oil dressing. Mix up the beans as to what you like. I often do garbanzo, kidney, black and corn and will then add red pepper flakes & finely diced jalapeño to the dressing.
Raspberry Zinger Poke Cake
Submitted by Cyndi Caylor, Para-Professional
Ingredients
- 1 box (18.25oz.) white cake mix
- Ingredients listed on box to prepare cake
- 1 box (3 oz.) raspberry flavored gelatin (Jello)
- 2 cups hot water
- 1 jar (10 oz.) raspberry preserves
- 1 tub (8 oz.) Cool Whip, thawed
- 1 bag (7 oz.) shredded coconut
Instructions
- Bake the cake according to package directions using a 9x13-inch baking pan.
- After the cake has baked, remove from the oven and allow to cool for 30 minutes. Using the handle end of a wooden spoon or a meat fork, poke cake every inch or so with the handle of wooden spoon or tines of meat fork halfway into the cake. There is no set number of holes, but you want plenty of places to fill. Mix the raspberry gelatin with 2 cups of hot water until dissolved. Pour the Jello evenly over the cake, trying to fill the holes as much as you can.
- In a small bowl, microwave the raspberry preserves until easy to spread, about 30 seconds. Pour the preserves over the top of the cake and spread evenly. Top with Cool Whip. Sprinkle the shredded coconut over the top. Refrigerate for at least 4 hours before serving.
- Store leftovers in the refrigerator.
Yield: 24, Serving Size: 1
