PRINCIPAL CORNER
Dear OSES Families,
Every once in a while, I find value in revisiting our school mission.
The mission of Orlando Science Elementary School (OSES) is to provide a well-rounded education with special emphasis in Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics (STEM), while using research-based and innovative instructional methods in a stimulating learning environment. OSES is committed to the social-emotional learning and character development of all students.
Its good to remind all stakeholders the reason WHY OSES exists. Starting in Kindergarten, we need to make sure we are providing students with a scientific foundation that will support them in developing their skills now and into the future. OSES is not just another charter school and I hope we are achieving our mission.
See you at the International Festival this Saturday.

THIS WEEK IN GRADES K-6
KINDERGARTEN
Volden
Kindergarten has had a busy and fun past few weeks! Students loved dressing in pink for Breast Cancer awareness, the boosterton run on Tuesday, and wearing red on Wednesday.
Students in Ms. Volden’s class have finished our Module 3 in reading. Students loved reading and learning about the amazing animals. Our module 4 will be focusing on learning about being a kind team player. This matches up with our Social Studies unit on Getting Along with Others perfectly! In math, students have learned subtraction strategies within 20. Students will have their topic test on Monday! For science, kindergarten has learned about day and night and gravity. Students loved drawing and labeling the daytime and nighttime skies.
FIRST
First grade had fun this week participating in Red Ribbon Day and STEM rotations on Wednesday allowing them to get hands on with learning. Thank you to our amazing volunteers who are always willing to help us with these days the students love them. Also, permission slips for the Gatorland field trip were due today, if you were selected as a chaperone, please make sure that your Additions account is active for the current school year.
Congratulation to the students below for their completion of Xtra Math in their classes.

What We’re Learning in Second Grade!
It’s been a busy couple of weeks here in second grade! Between the Boosterthon fundraiser, our support of breast cancer awareness by wearing pink last Friday, our Fun Run – where our class showed team spirit as the “Ramphal Rush” team proudly dressed in orange – and today’s Red Ribbon Day, we’ve still found time to dive into some exciting lessons! Here’s what we’ve been working on:
In math, we are building our subtraction skills by using place value, models, and the partial differences method to subtract two-digit numbers. These approaches help us deepen our understanding and make problem-solving easier.
In social studies, we’re learning to tell the difference between natural resources and human-made items. We’re also exploring how people live in different environments and how these environments provide us with essentials like food, clothing, and shelter.
In language arts, we’ve been retelling stories, discussing themes, and understanding the author’s purpose. We’re also identifying features of realistic fiction and recognizing organizational patterns, such as chronological order, to see how structure supports an author’s message.
In science, our focus has been on energy and forces. We’re studying light, heat, and fuel as energy sources, learning about electricity use at home, and discovering how forces like push and pull affect objects around us.
THIRD
Jiawan
As October rolls in and the leaves begin to change, we’ve been busy in our classroom with an exciting Pumpkin Project! This hands-on activity allowed the kids to dive into their creativity and writing skills. We’re embracing the beauty of the changing seasons in our classroom! This month, we’ve been diving deep into the fascinating world of plants, focusing on photosynthesis and how our natural environment transforms as we transition into winter.
FOURTH
Currently in Science, we are working on objects in motion. We have been able to do a lot of hands-on experiments to see how we can apply force to create motion. This is a great transition into our next topic on energy.
Fourth grade also had a great time at the Fun Run on Tuesday! My class won a challenge to get to pie Mrs. Greene. Big thank you to everyone that contributed. Do not forget that our upcoming field trip to WonderWorks is on November 12th, permission slips were due on October 31st. We cannot wait.
FIFTH
Prince
In fifth grade, we’ve been busy with narrative non-fiction and learning how to interpret figurative language—it’s been great to see the students engage with this! We’ve also been hard at work with our writing. We recently finished up an expository essay on the problems caused by the red tide in Florida, and now we’re moving on to an argumentative essay on whether students should wear uniforms. Once we finish, we’ll have
our first cclassroom debate where everyone gets to defend their positions—it should be lively and a lot of fun!
Last Friday was a highlight, with everyone dressed in pink.
Yesterday the students had an absolute blast during the fun run. It was a great way to build some school spirit. We’ve been learning, growing, and making memories together.
SPECIALS
McAdams- P.E.
This week in PE we are focusing on developing fundamental motor skills while promoting sportsmanship and teamwork. In our games we are focusing on:
Sportsmanship
1. Respect for Others: Encourage students to respect their peers, coaches, and opponents, emphasizing fair play.
2. Positive Attitude: Teach the importance of maintaining a positive attitude, whether winning or losing.
3. Handling Disappointment: Help students learn to cope with loss gracefully and to celebrate others’ successes.
SIXTH
Duenas - STEM
In 6th Grade STEM class, students were able to start Unit 3 of the chapter No Bones about it: Designing Knee Brace. Students were tasked to create their google slide presentation about the development/the evolution of knee braces or braces and determine the properties of materials used in building it. Students were able to do the Wet Footprint test and were able to observe the range of motion of their knees using a goniometer. They also had the chance to understand “Biomechanics” which talks about how living things move and what parts of the body are used and how these parts work together to perform their functions. Students were able to learn the game “Sipa” a traditional game in the Philippines using your foot to kick (body movement) this not only improved their academic skills but also enabled them to enhance their social skills and value one’s culture. The students also are learning about how different body systems work together to attempt to keep the body homeostasis. The class were also able to dress up in red in line with the celebration of the red ribbon week.
For this week, students will be making their own knee brace design. They will present
Bravo - Spanish
In Spanish class, students are currently engaged in a unit on Food Items. They are creating supermarket advertisements and will soon work on supermarket conversations. Following this, they will recreate a restaurant experience, taking turns as customers and employees, and creating their own menus.
Additionally, we are exploring Mexican culture, particularly focusing on the Day of the Dead. Students have watched Coco and The Book of Life and have created their own sugar skulls. Pictures of their creations will be posted next week.
Please continue to check Google classroom and OSES connect regularly for classwork, grades, and behavior info needed.
