VOGELTOWN SCHOOL PANUI
TE KURA O HUATOKI. TERM 2, WEEK 6, 2024.
KIA ORA VOGELTOWN WHĀNAU!
Kia ora koutou parents and whānau.
Over time at school, it’s likely that our tamariki will come across many environmental, sustainability, or kaitiaki themes to their learning. It’s no different here for us at Vogeltown this term as many classes touch upon the theme of sustainability.
Sustainability is defined as looking at ways to meet the needs of the present without compromising the ability of future generations to meet their needs.
As the world changes, humans must also change along with it. This means children must be part of this too. By gradually introducing children from a young age to the idea of sustainability and explaining why it’s important, they will have a much easier time adjusting to a new normal.
So what can you do to teach your child about sustainability?
- Lead by example. Show children how to reduce, reuse and recycle; teach them to turn off the lights when leaving a room and to save water; and talk about food and product choices so they can become more informed consumers.
- Get involved in community projects. Becoming involved in local environmental projects is a great way to show how they can make a difference.
- Explore nature. Participating in outdoor activities could help them become interested in doing more to care for their local community and our planet.
- Talk about environmental decisions and issues. By explaining to them what is going on and why changes are necessary, their ability to adjust and make more informed decisions will be easier.
Right now, the need to educate our children is more important than ever - the more they know, the better off we all will be.

SPELLATHON 2024
What a fantastic day we had on Thursday, watching our Vogeltown learners shine in the bi-annual spellathon! It was clear that everyone had been practising hard over the past few weeks.
Now, for the most exciting part: we have some amazing spot prizes ready for our students! The prizes are divided into categories based on the amount of money raised:
$1 - $15
$16 - $50
Over $50
Next week, each syndicate will hold a random draw to see who wins the prizes. To be in to win, just donate some money to support our fundraiser. Make sure to include the child’s name and classroom number when you donate to the following bank account: 15-3955-0502904-00.
But wait! There is more…the classroom in each syndicate that raises the most money will receive a PIZZA LUNCH!
Good luck everyone, and thank you so much for your incredible support!
DADS AND DAUGHTERS
Friday 21st June at 7:30 am in the school hall!
Our ‘Dads and Daughters’ breakfast is coming and we need you there! Don't miss out on this fantastic community event!
We encourage all ‘daughters’ at school to come along with their Dad or a significant other adult male (such as their grandad, uncle, cousin, brother) to enjoy some quality time together. We will also have a group of ‘surrogate Dads’ available - local police officers, Taranaki rugby players and some of our own teachers - on this day for those daughters who are unable to have someone with them on this morning.
It's something you don't want to miss so mark it on the calendar now! Please return the notice sent home as soon as possible to help us with our organisation.
OTHER INTERSCHOOL SPORTS TEAMS!
Our interschool sports exchanges don't just involve the codes of rugby, netball and football. Depending on the ability of other schools to field a team, we also have chess, basketball and indoor bowls as options. This is a great opportunity to involve children with a different skill set. In the photo below are a couple of our chess players practicing at lunchtime.
TODAY'S INTERSCHOOL RESULTS
We had a great time at Fitzroy School today for interschool, despite the weather!
Results were as follows:
Basketball: 40-34 to Fitzroy
Football: 8-3 to Fitzroy
Chess: 22-16 to VogeltownNetball B: 8-2 to Fitzroy
Netball A: 13-12 to Vogeltown
Rugby: 30-26 to Fitzroy
A big thanks to all our supporters who came out to cheer us on!
ARRIVING AT SCHOOL ON TIME
It is important that children arrive at school on time. Arriving at school early gives children the chance to settle in before the day begins and allows them to start the day positively.
Arriving early ensures that:
- Your child is able to connect with their teacher and classmates before the day begins.
- Your child can complete early morning routines and get ready for their school day.
- Your child doesn’t miss out on the important learning activities that happen first thing.
Routines are the best way to ensure you can get to school on time and some examples include:
- Being organised for the next day by making sure bags are packed, clothes are laid out, and homework is completed the afternoon/night before.
- Make sure children get to bed at a reasonable time. A well-rested student is a student prepared to learn.
- Have a good breakfast. Studies show that students who do not eat breakfast have poorer performance than students who eat before class.
- Be happy! For a child who may already be reluctant to go to school, a positive start to the day is really important. Despite how busy your mornings may be, try to keep a smile on your face and stay upbeat.
PROSPECTIVE STUDENTS
It is important that we know if you have a son or daughter starting school sometime in the remainder of this year. This will allow us to put organisation in place for new students - especially those starting school, and to understand our predicted roll throughout the year.
You can do this by contacting the office to confirm that we have your son or daughter on our records, or by completing an enrolment form (which can be collected from the school or downloaded off our website).
If you know of anyone else living in zone that may be looking to enrol then please share this message with them.
