Tashua Family Weekly Update
Mrs. Neumeyer, Principal
April 11, 2025
Dear Tashua Families,
Hip, Hip, Hooray...it is time for a much needed and well-deserved spring break! 😊 I hope this
upcoming week provides you and your child time to REST and RECHARGE for the remaining weeks
of the school year.
SBA Testing
In two weeks we will begin to administer the Smarter Balanced Assessments to our students in
grades 3-5. The SBA assessments will expose students to Common Core English/Language Arts
questions and Mathematics problems. In addition to the SBA assessments, our students in grade
5 will be taking the NGSS Science Field Test. We hope students will not be absent during the
testing period, except for illness, and that they will strive to do their very best.
SBA Testing Schedule
Grade 3
4/29 & 4/30: English Language Arts
5/6 & 5/7: Math
5/13: Math Performance Task
Grade 4
4/29 & 4/30: English Language Arts
5/6 & 5/7: Math
5/13: Math Performance Task
Grade 5
4/29 & 4/30: English Language Arts
5/6 & 5/7: Math
5/8: Math Performance Task
5/13 & 5/14: NGSS - Science Field Test
Here are some ways you can help us from home:
- Make sure your child arrives to school on time. If he or she is late, your child will not be able to enter the classroom until testing is done for the day. A make-up test will be given at another time by one of the specialists so your child will miss classroom instruction.
- Make sure your child has a nutritious breakfast. Even toast and a piece of fruit will provide the body and brain energy.
- Make sure your child gets plenty of sleep. Most children need at least 10 hours of sleep each night. Children cannot do their best work when they are tired.
- Let your child know that you expect him or her to try their very best. Some children can become so worried about taking a test that they cannot demonstrate what they know. It will not be effective to just tell your child not to worry. Instead, share these tips:
- Tell your child to remember past tests where he or she did well and remind your child that he or she can do well again!
- Reassure your child. Let your child know that all you expect is his or her best effort.
If you would like to learn more about the Smarter Balanced assessments, you can log onto:
In addition to the SBA assessments, we will be administering our district iReady assessments and Trimester 3 DIBELS during the end of April through May. Please keep in mind, smartphones and watches, with the capacity to call, text, take pictures or use a calculator are not permitted in school.
These devices need to be turned off and placed in the students' backpacks if they are at school. If you need to get an important message to your child, please contact the front office, 203-452-4433.
Author Visits
Tashua welcomed two more award-winning authors this week! Authors Josh Funk and Rob Buyea spoke with students about character development and where they find inspiration for their stories. Students who purchased signed copies of books should have received them this week. We would also like to say "THANK YOU" to our PTA for sponsoring the three author visits we had this spring!

Save the Date: Tashua's Field Day

Tashua Parent Diversity Committee: National Arab American Heritage Month
National Arab American Heritage Month (NAAHM) is an annual commemoration in April of the culture, traditions and history of Arab American people in the United States. In 2017, two non-profit organizations initiated the launch of an official national designation of the month. It began with support from a few states, and has gained momentum each year. According to the Arab American Institute, an estimated 3.7 million Americans trace their roots to an Arab country. The Arab World consists of 22 countries in the Middle East and North Africa including Algeria, Bahrain, the Comoros Islands, Djibouti, Egypt, Iraq, Jordan, Kuwait, Libya, Morocco, Mauritania, Oman, Palestine, Qatar, Saudi Arabia, Somalia, Sudan, Syria, Tunisia, the United Arab Emirates, and Yemen. Arab American Heritage Month is an excellent time to explore the rich history and culture of people who are Arab American as well as analyzing the bias and discrimination faced by them.

TAKE NOTE
Although the start of the 2025-26 school year is several months away, we will begin our class placement process after the April break. This is a very involved process, as we will strive to create balanced classes at each grade level. In addition to balancing the number of boys and girls in a class, we also strive to create academically balanced classes. The goal is to create classes in which each classroom teacher will be able to meet the needs of all learners. This is a very complex process.
As we begin this task, we will keep the following goals foremost in our mind:
- to consider the needs of all students and to maximize our ability to deliver appropriate instruction in accordance with students’ needs
- to consider any unique needs that any student might have
The process for assigning children to classes will begin with the current classroom teachers who will meet together by grade level with our reading consultants, math specialist, our social worker, and me. We will meet again several times to make any changes which we feel will benefit the groupings. Modifications will be made as necessary, resulting in the final lists.
I would also like to offer parents the opportunity to be a part of this process. While it is
impossible for me to accept requests from parents for specific teachers, you may write a letter to me explaining your child’s learning style and the type of learning environment you feel is best for your child.
In past years, some parents/guardians have made requests of current classroom teachers to place their children with particular teachers or students for the next grade. Please understand that
teachers cannot honor these requests; there is no reason to meet with teachers to discuss next year’s placement.
If you, as a parent/guardian, feel your child has a particular learning need in which we might be unaware, I ask that you inform me, in writing, of your child’s need. I will then bring this need to the attention of our teachers. This is not an opportunity to request teachers or classmates; it is merely an opportunity to make us aware of your child’s needs. No teacher names should appear in your letter. Further, the names of other students should also not appear in your letter, as your request could potentially impact another student’s learning needs. In order to meet our timeline, I must have your letter by Friday, April 25th: NO EXCEPTIONS.
All of these steps will be completed prior to the end of the school year. Throughout the months of July and August, new students who move into the Tashua district will be added to the lists. Students who move from our district will be removed from the lists. Occasionally there may be staff changes. In any of these instances, we may find that one change necessitates another. It is for this reason that we notify families/students of class placement in our August communications.
Please know we all take this process very seriously. We want the best placement for each child at Tashua School and we will work diligently to ensure that we reach this goal.

2025 - 2026 School Supply Drive
It’s hard to believe that we are thinking ahead to the next academic year, but here it is! Our Supplies to Please fundraiser is here to alleviate the stress and hecticness around school shopping. We’ve all been there when supplies run low and you are shopping around for the best deal.
Our Tashua teachers already compiled their list of supplies that all students will need for next year based on their grade level to help take the stress out of preparing our kids for next year.
This fundraiser funds the Wellness Bags for all the teachers and staff at the start of the year, which includes wellness items such as tissues, hand sanitizer, soap, paper towels, etc.
It’s as easy as logging onto Supplies To Please, clicking on “Place Your Order” and using the credentials below:
Username: Tashua
Password: tash2025
Make sure that you are selecting the grade your child is going into for NEXT year. There is also an option to provide a monetary donation.
Orders can be taken up to June 18th and picking up the supplies will happen in August! We will not be purchasing any spare kits so act quickly and order your kit today!
Any questions, please reach out to Amanda Wagner at aldwagna@gmail.com.
