Dear Wasco Families,

Our staff is noticing how well the students are progressing through our academic lessons.

As an example, our youngest students are already learning the many ways we manipulate numbers in Mathematics. The schoolwide daily Math instruction practices include routines for sharing different ways to compose and decompose mathematical expressions. These routines also incorporate the value of sharing ideas for learning. Students’ peers can be effective teachers and students simultaneously learn to value the contributions of all members in their learning community. In this way we honor and value the contributions of others. Academic and social goals met at the same time!

We at Wasco want to make sure your student stays healthy and safe here at school and in the

community, especially with Covid-19.

Regarding Covid: (at this time)

If a student develops any of the following symptoms during school hours that student will be sent home and cannot return until they get a negative Covid test result. Siblings at this time Do Not need to be sent home unless the sibling with the symptoms tests positive. Once the siblings are home from school they cannot return to school until the student with the symptoms gets a negative Covid test result.

If a student develops any of the following symptoms while at home, then All siblings, unless vaccinated and symptom free, need to stay home until the sibling with symptoms receives a negative Covid test result.

Fever (100.4 or higher), new onset of moderate to severe headache, shortness of breath, new cough, sore throat, vomiting, diarrhea, new loss of sense of taste or smell, fatigue from unknown cause and muscle or body aches from an unknown cause.

ALL MEDICATION, including vitamins and cough drops needs a doctor’s authorization to be administered here at school. You can find the form(s) on the district website.

For sniffles and runny noses without a fever I encourage the student to drink more water and rest in the Health Office for 5-10 minutes. They usually feel better after that amount of time. If after that amount of time they do not feel better, I will call you and have you speak with your child to determine if they need to go home or not.

For Head injuries, I will immediately call if your child complains of a headache, dizziness, drowsiness, disorientation, vomits, feels faint or has a fever. If your child bumped his head and does not describe any of the above symptoms, I will send them to class and reassess an hour or so later and follow up with an email to you to watch for the above symptoms at home.

For Pink Eye, I will call if I suspect your child has symptoms such as red, itchy, watery eyes with notable goop/discharge from the corners of the eye. I will suggest you take them to a Minute Clinic to rule out Pink Eye. This is a precautionary measure to protect the other students and staff. If they are not diagnosed with Pink Eye they can come back to school with a note from the doctor.

DENTAL EXAMS:

State law requires that all Illinois children in kindergarten, second and sixth grade have a dental examination. A licensed dentist must perform the exam and sign the form. Each child in kindergarten, 2nd & 6 th grade must present proof of a dental examination by a dentist prior to May 15th, 2022. You may download the dental form on the district website at www.d303.org by going to the Parent drop down menu under Forms and then Health Forms.

Miss Green, our fantastic Empower Teacher, is on the search for the following materials to help with upcoming modules this year:

• Board games, board game pieces/parts.

• Cardboard of any type large or small including paper towel and toilet paper tubes.

• Toys: legos, building toys, science kits, K’Nex, tinker toys, broken toys, figures, etc.

• Large Wooden craft sticks

• Duct Tape (plain and patterned), electrical tape, masking tape, painters tape

• Wires, pipe cleaners/chenille sticks, wikki stix

• New Batteries (all sizes)

• Household items: Disposable plates, foil, wax paper, coffee filters, toothpicks, straws

• Packaging materials such as bubble wrap

• Craft items: popsicle sticks, paint sticks, buttons, beads, yarn, origami and craft paper

• Any Green items: gloves, straws, string, yarn, cups, (for use with our green screen)

• Plastic Bags: Gallon size, quart size, sandwich size

Please have your child bring all tube donations directly to the office. We appreciate your help!

What are some traditions or superstitions you have for the First Day of School?

Miss Christoffel: I am always excited, but nervous for the first day of school! I make sure to wake up super early and get to school early so that I am prepared for the day. I love meeting the kiddos outside and seeing everyone so excited and dressed nice for the first day! It is so fun getting to know each new class and starting to create those memories with them from day one.

If you could pass on any wisdom to your students, what would you share?

Miss Christoffel: Always follow the “Golden Rule” and treat others the way you would want to be treated.

How do you spend your summer breaks?

Miss Christoffel: Throughout the summer I nanny for a family with 3 children. I also spend my days with my young nieces and nephew. One of my favorite summer activities is reading by the pool or beach!

As we enter into some possibly cooler weather, students should come to school prepared to spend time outdoors. Students are typically outside for recess breaks, PE four times a week, and can be outdoors for classroom activities. We appreciate your attention to the forecast and providing your child with clothing choices to adjust to cooler temperatures is appreciated. Also, as the weather gets cooler, it is helpful to send extra masks in case a change is necessary due to condensation. The D303 mask guidelines are provided below for your reference and can also be found at the link below.

We hope it doesn’t happen to your family, but we do want to share the D303 Quarantine Information page for your review. If you have questions about the procedure, or if we can help your family, please contact the Wasco Health office or Principal Brennan.

You can use the map link above to identify your child’s entrance and exit door. Upon arrival, students should enter the building through their designated door, where they will be greeted by a staff member. At the end of the day, students exit through the same door and proceed to a designated area sorted by their transportation home. Our students who ride the bus line up with a peer and staff bus monitor. Students who are picked up by car stand on the front sidewalk and wait for their ride to arrive. This is the same pattern we used last year. We appreciate it when you extend cooperation and consideration for others in our school community. The kids learn from all of us and we are a team working together to help children build lifelong skills and positive community habits.

Reminder: When dropping off your child from your vehicle, please do not exit your car. If you need to help your child exit the vehicle, please park in the lot and walk your child to the sidewalk.
