Principal's Corner

As I write this weekly update, I reflect on the first marking period of the 23-24 school year. I'm proud of the work being done to support all students here at Godwin Heights Middle School. The staff has worked diligently to build relationships with all students to help them feel safe, loved, and supported to ensure that learning can happen. Teachers have been exploring MAP data to see what our students already know, and what they are ready to learn. This best practice is helping to make sure they are making data informed decisions when it comes to classroom content. They also work tirelessly to plan lesson plans incorporating the best practices including student engagement activities while holding high expectations for learning in their classrooms.

Our support staff is visible to support student needs and hold them accountable to the expectations within the building. Our academic support team is partnering with the teachers in the classrooms to provide any extra help within the classrooms and also in after school tutoring. Our team of administrators are working to make sure students and staff feel supported in all they do. High expectations have been set and continue to be enforced. Parents have been supportive in sending their students to school daily ready to learn. Finally, our students are coming daily, prepared for classes, and meeting the classroom learning goals daily. Thank you again for the great start and I look forward to continuing the strong start to the school year. If I can support you or your child in any way, please reach out and ask.

There's still time to sign up!

Conferences are an opportunity for parents and guardians to meet with teachers to discuss how students are doing in class and areas they can work on to improve. In order to provide as many conferences as possible, they will be by appointment only. We ask that you be on time for your scheduled appointment and keep each meeting to the allotted 5 minutes.


Conferences will be held in person by scheduling through our online system. If you would like a translator, please select that option when booking. Students’ counselors will also be available by appointment if you would like to talk with them during this time. Parents/guardians are encouraged to bring their students to conferences.


If you cannot attend in person and would like to request phone conferences from teachers, please call the school office at 252-2070.


Please note: Translators will not be available for phone conferences.

Adjusted Tutoring Times

Due to Parent Teacher Conferences, tutoring will be in the Media Center at the following times:


  • Wednesday & Thursday : 1:15-3:15
  • Friday: 11:15-12:00

Reminder: Transportation afterward is not included.

Attendance Matters - Don't Miss Out!

The loss of learning adds up. Do your best to be in school! Parents, if your child is unable to attend for any reason, please call the office to excuse their absence at 616-252-2070.

Covid Questions?

STUDENTS:

  • If students have a fever, vomiting or diarrhea, they are asked to go home.

  • If COVID positive and asymptomatic or well enough to return to school (No fever for 24 hours), a well-fitting mask is encouraged. Nothing is required.

  • If your child tests positive, please notify the building office. We are still required by health code to report positive cases as a communicable disease.


Presently, the Administration Office and school building offices have self-administered antigen tests available for interested staff or parents.


The Michigan Department of Health and Human Services has provided public health recommendations for response to COVID Infection or Exposure.

AUTHOR VISIT NOV. 3 - PREORDER A SIGNED BOOK !

On November 3rd we are hosting Dana Vanderlugt, author of "Enemies in the Orchard", a new book inspired by the little-known history of POW labor camps in the United States.



Set in the backdrop of World War II, this middle-grade novel in verse is told in first person poems and features Claire, a Midwestern girl who longs to enter high school and become a nurse even as she worries for her soldier brother, and Karl, a German prisoner of war who is processing the war as he works on Claire's family farm. Against a vivid backdrop of home front tensions and daily life, intimate entries reveal their hopes and struggles, and their growing friendship even as the war rages on. What are their chances of connection, of redemption, of peace?
