Understanding Behavior while Improving Partnership
Alicia Van Liere-Otsego Public Schools District Therapist will be in the Media Center, on the evening of Thursday, March 6th, presenting on “Understanding Behavior while Improving Partnership”
Sessions will run at 5pm, 6pm, 7pm (45 minute sessions)
Parents may choose the session that works best for them!
Session Overview: Do you ever find yourself wondering, "Why is my child doing this?!" or "Why is my child acting like this?!". Are you feeling exhausted and would like some more tools in your parent toolbox to combat negative behaviors? Or maybe, you just want more tools period. If this sounds like you, I would invite you to come and join this session. Parents tell me all of the time, "I just wish I knew how to help my child". In this session we are going to unpack the idea that "All Behavior is Communication" and our child's way of letting us know what they need. When you leave this session, you will be able to identify when a behavioral escalation is coming, and learn helpful tips and tricks to deescalate the situation before it becomes an hour long event. We are all in this together! I hope to see you there!

From Mrs. Katie: Keep your elementary schooler motivated with these strategies
You don’t just want your child to learn. You want your child to want to learn! Motivation drives students to put in effort, persevere and achieve goals. To motivate your elementary schooler to put effort into learning:
• Stay engaged. When families are involved in education, kids do better in school. Talk about school, monitor schoolwork and communicate with the teacher regularly.
• Have a positive outlook. Say that you believe your child can succeed in school. And if your student struggles, work with the teacher to find solutions.
• Promote independence. Give your child age-appropriate freedoms—choosing between two places to read, or whether to do math before or after dinner, for example.
• Correct mistakes in positive ways. “You spelled everything right except these two words! I bet you can learn them with practice” is more motivating than “You seem to struggle with spelling.”
• Give specific compliments. It’s better to say, “Your report is written so neatly. I can tell that you really took your time” rather than “Nice handwriting.”
• Add more to learning. Let school lessons spark your imagination. Visit educational websites with your child. Take a trip to the state capital, plant a window garden or calculate distances between points on map together.
