HHS MEDIA CENTER NEWSLETTER NOVEMBER 2024
A TIME TO BE THANKFUL!
As November unfolds, we find ourselves reflecting on gratitude and the kindness that surrounds us. This month is a perfect time to appreciate the simple joys in life, like curling up with a good book. Reading not only expands our horizons but also fosters empathy and understanding, allowing us to connect with different perspectives.
By sharing our love for stories with others, we can inspire a similar passion in those around us, creating a community bound by the magic of literature. As we give thanks for the warmth of family, friends, and the worlds found within pages, let us also commit to spreading kindness and nurturing a love of reading that can light up the hearts of many.
READING AND DEVELOPING A LOVE OF READING IS CRUCIAL!
Reading regularly can improve literacy and language skills which affect us during our lifetime. Reading comprehension & reading fluency, and decoding benefit from a regular reading practice.
Having strong literacy skills by the end of high school, will help with achievement and success in college, post college and the trades.
Fiction books may also have several other benefits for teens.
Reading fiction books might help teens develop their understanding of 'who they are'. Connecting with fictional characters helps readers to explore their own identities, such as personalities, experiences, values, goals, thoughts, and beliefs, and help us understand why we think, feel, and behave in certain ways.
Reading fiction might give us an opportunity to experiment with different identities in safe, imagined environments .

100 Books Before Graduation
Lake County Public Library has a 100 Books before Graduation reading challenge! Here's how to join.
The goal of this program is for students in grades 6-12 to read 100 books before graduating high school.
Students who participate in the program will receive prizes as they read. Prizes will be awarded after reading 25, 50, 75, and 100 books.
Most importantly, it is our hope that you will expand your critical thinking, vocabulary, and empathy, and increase test scores along the way!
Reading to a pet can be fun and promote speech and reading skills
Reading to pets can be a wonderful therapeutic activity for teens, offering several benefits:
Stress Relief: Interacting with animals can reduce stress and anxiety. Reading aloud to a pet creates a calming environment that helps teens feel more relaxed.
Improved Reading Skills: Teens often feel less pressure reading to a non-judgmental audience. This practice can boost their confidence, improve fluency, and enhance their overall reading skills.
Emotional Support: Pets provide unconditional love and companionship, which can be particularly comforting for teens dealing with emotional challenges. Reading to them can strengthen this bond.
Social Skills: Engaging in this activity can help teens develop communication skills and learn to express themselves better, which can be beneficial in social situations.
Routine and Responsibility: Incorporating reading into a regular routine with a pet fosters a sense of responsibility and commitment, helping teens develop positive habits.
Creativity and Imagination: Reading different genres can spark creativity and imagination, allowing teens to explore new ideas and worlds.
Overall, reading to pets combines the joy of literature with the therapeutic benefits of animal companionship, making it a valuable activity for teens.
