Family Newsletter — Sunday, March 10th, 2024
Good afternoon, Spartan Families,
We are several weeks into the second semester, and students and Staff have settled into routines and expectations. Staff stands by the door during passing periods, greeting students and making connections. As my administrative team and I visit classrooms, Staff and students are engaged in activities that lead to learning.
Following our Annual Action Plan, Staff create a culture where productive struggle is encouraged and embraced. The productive struggle of getting stuck, asking questions, and persevering is evident. We see our staff provide explicit instruction, break concepts into manageable parts, and provide opportunities for students to receive support outside of class. Examples are Staff being available before and after school, Math nights, Credit Recovery, and Saturday Academies.
Other items within our Annual Action Plan that Staff has implemented are providing repeated exposure to new vocabulary, scaffolded lessons, and multiple strategies to support students where they are. We will continue our intentional work in these areas.
As Spring Break approaches, students should check in with Staff for extra support and ask if there are items to make up to finish strong before Spring Break. Families are also encouraged to sign up for Spring Conferences starting March 27th. Please do not hesitate to contact Staff with questions and concerns.
On Tuesday, March 12th, remember to attend the Fentanyl Awareness Presentation in the PAC at 6:00 pm. There will be helpful information shared.
This week is Classified Week! I want to thank our Para-educators, Custodians, Maintenance and Technology, Food Service, Health Room Assistants, Bus Drivers, and Secretaries for their outstanding work with our students. We are lucky to have you!
Have a great week!
Sincerely,
Mike Washington
Principal

Updates and Reminders
Tardies
There has been a daily increase in tardies, especially to 1st period. Please help encourage your student to arrive at school on time. The expectation is for students to be in class when the second bell rings at 7:40 am. Thank you for being so supportive in this area.
Non-Parent/Guardian Pick Ups
Dear Parents and Guardians -
If someone other than the listed Parent or Guardian needs to pick up your student during school hours, "Day Of" permission is needed. Please make sure that you call the Office at 360-629-1300, send an email to Attendance, or send in a note that morning.
"Day Of" permission is needed for those designated as Emergency Contacts as well.
We cannot release a student without "Day Of" permission to anyone other than a listed Parent or Guardian. Thank you for your assistance in keeping our students safe!
Locations open during lunches
The North Gym and the Library are open during both lunches. Food and drinks are not allowed in either location. Students are not permitted in hallways during lunch as classes are in session.
Spring Play
March 15th and 16th
Come join us for a fresh take on the classic fairy tale, Rodgers and Hammerstein’s Cinderella. This hilarious musical has all the beautiful songs from the original play but updates the script with some surprising twists. Cinderella longs to escape the toil of her life at home, yet recognizes that she can change the world through kindness and compassion. It’s a wonderful show for the whole family.
The play will be presented at 7 p.m., March 15th and 16th. Tickets are $10 for adults, $8 for students, or $25 for a parent pass (all four nights) — can be purchased at the box office or online via GoFan (for a small fee). Don't miss this play for the whole family.

Help Us Fight Fentanyl
Please join us for an important community safety forum.
Fentanyl Awareness Night will teach students, families, and the community what you need to know about this danger that’s now laced into most street drugs.
This synthetic opioid is being pressed into fake pills — and it’s 50x more potent than heroin. A lethal dose can be only 2 milligrams. Local criminals are marketing these pills to our children.
Join us at 6 p.m. Tuesday, March 12, at Stanwood High School in the PAC to hear from local, state, and federal experts about protecting yourself and your family. This free community forum is open to everyone.

WESCO Spectator Guidelines & Sportsmanship Code
The essential elements of character-building and ethics in interscholastic athletics are embodied in the concept of seven core principles: sportsmanship, discipline, leadership, teamwork, responsibility, dedication, and respect. To demonstrate sportsmanship in the stands, we ask all spectators to adhere to these 5 basic guidelines:
- I will appreciate all good plays and players, whether they compete for my team or my opponent.
- I will remember that school athletics are an extension of the classroom and that learning is taking place.
- I will be positive and use respectful language towards players, coaches, officials, and other spectators.
- I will respect the abilities and sensitivities of our opponents and officials, regardless of the outcome of the contest.
- I will remember that my actions reflect on others, including students, school, and the community.

Still time to take and share the annual community survey!
So far, about 300 community members have taken our annual Community Survey. The feedback is a crucial ingredient in helping us plan for and prioritize for the years ahead.
Last year, more than 1,300 responses came in and helped us adjust our practices in several ways. The survey should take about 10 minutes, and all results will be anonymous.
