Recap of the AI Empowered Edu Conference
The AI Empowered EDU Conference, hosted by Multnomah ESD, Clackamas ESD, and Northwest Regional ESD, brought together school leaders from across our regions at the University of Portland campus to engage in thought-provoking conversations around the integration of AI in education.
The conference hosted local and national experts and focused on the ethics and equity of AI use in educational settings, including presenters from organizations such as the Kapor Center, Encode Justice, and Khan Academy. Sessions shared promising practices and considerations for the effective use of AI to personalize learning experiences, enhancing student engagement and success.

Reminder - Tribal Regalia for Native Students at Graduation
Friendly reminder about essential guidance concerning the use of culturally significant tribal regalia by Native students at graduation ceremonies, as mandated by the passing of House Bill 2052 (HB 2052). This legislation requires that all Oregon school districts permit Native students to wear tribal regalia during graduation ceremonies. It is aligned with Oregon’s commitment to fostering inclusivity, cultural understanding, and respect within our educational system, and honors and uplifts the cultural identities and traditions of American Indian and Alaska Native students and families.
MESD current policy, IKFB-Graduation Exercises, clearly calls out that “Graduating students will be allowed to wear Native American or other items of cultural significance.”
Program & Department Highlights
The Council for Opportunity in Education
The Council for Opportunity in Education (COE) is the think tank and advocacy arm of our federal TRIO programs nationwide. They are celebrating 60 years of serving low-income and first-generation students across the country. At MESD, we are lucky to have our own Alternative Pathways/TRiO program, which provides educational opportunities for low-income and first-generation students as they transition from high school to post-secondary education and was established with the passage of Title IV of the Higher Education Act of 1965, grant-funded through the US Department of Education. Since 1998, the MESD has supported a TRIO Talent Search project and since 2022, added another TRIO program called Upward Bound.
Geoffrey Garner has served with 10 other regional TRIO Presidents, Past Presidents, and Presidents-Elect for the past three years on the national board of directors with The Council for Opportunity in Education based in Washington, D.C. His duty is coming to an end in December, and it has been a worthwhile learning and leadership experience.
Most recently, Geof was with CNN's Manu Raju at The Capitol in between meetings with Senator Ron Wyden and Representative Val Hoyle. He also spent some time with fellow COE Board Members from Puerto Rico and Colorado and COE’s President, Kimberly Jones.
In Case You Missed It: School Nurse Day Celebration
On May 8th, MESD School Health Services (SHS) hosted approximately 100 nurses at the District Office to celebrate School Nurse Day with one of their annual Nurse Inservices. The event was kicked off by a warm welcome from MESD Board Member Katrina Doughty. The day featured insightful presentations on various critical topics, including professional burnout by keynote speaker Hannah Austin, head injuries by Melaney Grenz from CBIRT, drug assessment by Jessica Bollinger from Oregon Poison Control, diabetes technology by SHS CNN Jenn Carlton, audiology by SHS Audiologist Keri O'Connell Bennett, PNES by SHS RNs Alyson Soderquist and Sonja Newton, neurodiversity by SHS CNN Kathy Lucas and SHS Supervisor Christy Fawcett, and physical assessment by Katie Strawn from Multnomah County Student Health Centers. Participants enjoyed a delightful breakfast with donuts provided by MESDEA, gift bags from MESDEA, and a wonderful lunch catered by Kashrootz Kosher Catering. The Willy Wonka-themed event, complete with plenty of candy, provided ample opportunities for nurses to connect and celebrate their essential role in removing health-related barriers to education.
Helensview Prom
On May 9th, Helensview School celebrated the 2024 Prom with a “Fairytale” theme. Staff members and students collaborated to provide lights, flair, and music.
Delicious food and drinks were kindly prepared and served by staff members. Students enjoyed arriving in their gowns and slacks. Staff members joined by dressing up as well.
The night was a successful experience with dancing, laughter, pictures, student DJs and MCs. The positive energy amongst each individual and the genuine smiles of the students are what made the event absolutely cherishable.
