Engagement Strategy of the Month
It is essential to ensure students are discussing information that they learn in class. To make sure that students are owners of their learning teachers at Manual Arts utilize engagement structures to encourage student dialogue.
The Strategy for August and September is:
Round Robin
Round Robins are a great and easy way to start Kagan Structures in your classroom. Any time you pose an open-ended question a Round Robin can be used. The reason Round Robins are so great is that they give ALL students a chance to share their thoughts or ideas. We are NOT just calling on ONE student, we are allowing ALL students to respond within a lesson.
The steps to a Round Robin:
- Teacher poses an open-ended question
- Students are given think time
- Teacher selects the student to start (#1-4)
- Students take turns in number order sharing their idea

Latino Heritage Month
Manual Arts is proud to celebrate Latinx heritage from September 15 to October 15 during National Hispanic American Heritage Month. National Hispanic American Heritage Month is a perfect opportunity to celebrate the cultural assets and rich history of the Latino community that has contributed immensely to the fabric of our nation. As we celebrate Latino heritage, culture and history, please use this as an opportunity to incorporate culturally responsive strategies connecting our students’ funds of knowledge, backgrounds, and interest to the learning. English Learners and Standard English Learners alike, benefit from activities and curriculum that are aligned to the standards that uplift, validate, and affirm their cultures.
Please visit https://www.hispanicheritagemonth.gov/ to find interesting resources for National Hispanic American Heritage Month. Also, the Academic English Mastery Program has many tools to engage SELs in culturally responsive ways.

Williams Visit
iReady Personalized Instruction
It now time for students to begin personalized instruction in the iReady program.
- Teachers with 9th and 11th grade advisories, students will complete i-Ready my path reading during advisory on Wednesdays and Thursdays. The math components of i-Ready my path will be completed during the math tutorial lab
- Teachers with 10th and 12th grade advisories, students will complete i-Ready my path reading during homeroom on Wednesdays and math on Thursdays.
- Students are expected to complete 2 lessons in Reading and 2 lessons in Math per week at 70%.
Minga
This week we rolled out our Minga Hall pass program. I would like to give a round of applause to all our teachers that are using the program (see below). If you have any questions on how to use Minga, please see Ms. Lahaise. It is essential that everyone utilizes Minga as this is how we will be identifying students that are engaging in inappropriate behaviors during instructional time.
Got Old Phones/iPads
We are rolling out our behavior management system. A vital piece of the system is to be able to access Minga for our campus aides. If anyone has an old phone or iPad they are no longer using that they would like to donate to the cause, please see Dr. Flowers
Healthy Start
To refer a student or family for services (medical insurance enrollment, food, clothing, housing, vision & dental) please either fill out the referral form located outside Rm 120 and place it in my mailbox or complete this electronic referral form: https://forms.office.com/r/dYkyqhiGdd

Gate Students
Dr. Castro is looking for students that may meet the eligibility criteria for the Gifted and Talented Education (Gate) program.
Identification Categories:
- Intellectual Ability
- Specific Academic Ability
- Creative Ability
- Leadership Ability
- Visual Arts Ability
If you have any students that might fall into any of these categories please provide their name to Dr. Castro.
Skateboards and Bikes
All skateboards, bikes, and electric scooters should be stored in Room 172. Please do not store skateboards for students. Contact a campus aide so they can take scooter to Room 172 for proper storage.
Important Reminders
Bathroom/Hall Passes
No more than one student should be out from class at a time.
No passes the first or last 10 minute of class.
Please do not send students out without a pass to the restroom or any office.

Attendance
Submit Attendance the first 15 mins of class every period
MiSiS issues submit paper roster to room 120
Teachers will be notified by email if they have any outstanding attendance from PSA Counselor or office clerk
All teachers should take attendance no later than 3:00pm to ensure that we are receiving accurate attendance data daily
Make sure the student is physically in class, don't just assume and mark the student present as it will affect our attendance

All Manual Arts Faculty will regularly utilize writing across the curriculum
The distance from standard will be closed by 10 points on the Smarter Balanced Assessment in ELA and Math
No Outside Food Deliveries Allowed
The delivery of fast food/beverages is strictly prohibited as it is not consistent with school food service requirements, and it causes disruption to the school environment and the safety and well-being of students and employees (LAUSD BUL-154111.1).
To be in compliance and ensure safety, the District does not permit external food or beverages on campuses unless District-approved. Deliveries made to the school by delivery persons of any type who are not District-approved are not permitted and will be turned away. This includes but is not limited to:
Meeting students at the door, gate, or school parking lots
Leaving food at a designated drop-off location on the school perimeter
Clubs or athletic event parties *
Waiting by the gate for the food/beverages
* Exception – class or afterschool club/event with the approval of the principal at least 48 hours in advance and a staff member must meet the delivery person outside the school.
Administrators will be called to assist if students/staff are not compliant when staff implement this policy.
If a student forgets lunch, the student can contact the school office and the school cafeteria will provide the student with a free school lunch.
Cell Phone and Headphone Usage
Please be aware that while cell phones and smart watches are allowed at school, they must be turned off during instructional time and put away. Phones are available for student use in the main office in case of emergency, and parents can call the office if they need to relay an important message to a student. Earbuds are only allowed to be used under the guidance of a teacher.
Failure to comply with these rules will result in confiscation of the item(s). Students who bring cell phones or personal electronic items to school do so at their own risk. The school is not responsible for lost or stolen items.
