April 2024
Our Mission at South
Principal's Message:
Happy spring Bobcat families!
April and May bring such a great energy to a school campus! We have so much to look forward to like state tests, yearbook day, festivals, track, volleyball, tennis, and end of year activities.
Be sure to stay hydrated and get enough sleep to keep up with the high energy pace. It is recommended that teens sleep 8-10 hours each day. Many of our students report getting half of that. Their biggest sleep issues stem from an overstimulated brain trying to shut down. Consider some night time rituals like unplugging from devices, reading, a routine that signals bed time, stick to a schedule, limit caffeine and limit daytime naps.

Problem-Solving Skills for Students
One of our goals, at South, is to prepare students with healthy conflict resolution strategies. Problem solving is an important skill that is learned, like most things, through practice and failure. Now is a great time to empower your children to start solving small problems so that they grow up to become adults who are good at solving bigger ones. Here are some simple steps to build problem-solving skills!
Step 1: Listen and seek to clearly understand the problem.
“You and your friend are not talking to each other.”
“You didn’t get invited to the party.”
“You sound like you are upset with your friend.”
“Tell me in your own words what happened and how it is making you feel.”
Step 2: Offer empathy, and lovingly hand it back to your child.
“Oh, that sounds really hard.”
“What a bummer.”
“What are you thinking about doing?”
“What are you going to do?”
“I am so sorry… that sounds really difficult…”
Step 3: Brainstorm solutions & allow your child to choose one to try.
“Have you thought of any solutions or plans of action that you would like to talk about?”
“Would you like to hear some ideas?”
“Would you like to hear what other kids have tried?”
“Would you like to hear what I think you should do?”
If they respond, “no”, then back off and express your confidence in their ability to solve it.
Step 4: Look at the pros and cons of all solutions.
How do you think that will work out?
What can we do to make sure this doesn’t happen again?
Complete a list of pros and cons and compare them. Being able to see a list in front of you can help when comparing and contrasting different types of solutions with different types of problems.
Step 5: Put the solution into action. Follow-up later to see how it worked out.
“I know you can work this problem out with your friend. Let me know how it goes!”
“Good luck! I hope it works out.”
“You are going to do great but let's talk about this again after school (today/tomorrow) and do a quick check in.”
“I’m excited to see how this works out for you- I know it will go great and you will do great!”
