FCMS EXPRESS
Week of February 17, 2025
From Mr. Liggett
FCMS Family,
With the possibility of inclement weather ahead, I want to remind you of our eLearning
guidelines.
What is an eLearning Day?
An eLearning Day, as defined by the Indiana Department of Education,
allows instructional time to continue beyond the traditional classroom
setting. This option is utilized during inclement weather, professional
development days, parent-teacher conferences, or other challenges.
Will all assignments be digital on eLearning Days?
No. Assignments may vary by grade level/teacher:
- Paper/Pencil Options: Some teachers may send home packets in advance for potential use.
- Digital Assignments: Some teachers may use fully digital assignments.
- Combination: Other teachers may offer a combination or allow students to choose between digital and paper/pencil options.
How will I know my child’s assignments?
Your child’s school or teacher will send home a description of the assignment(s) either through paper form or via electronic communication. At the secondary level, the assignment(s) will likely be on their Canvas account.
How much time should students spend on assignments?
Students should expect to spend 10-20 minutes per subject completing their assignments.
How long do students have to submit work?
All students (K-12) have five school days from the eLearning day to submit their assignments. Example: If an eLearning Day occurs on Monday, September 6, assignments are due by Monday, September 13.
- Digital Assignments: Must be submitted by midnight of the due date.
- Paper/Pencil Assignments: Must be submitted by the end of the school day in which they are due.
Will teachers have “office hours” for student support?
Yes. Teachers will have “office hours” on eLearning Days from 9:00 AM–11:00 AM and again from 1:00 PM–3:00 PM.
How can I contact my child’s teacher?
All teachers can be reached via email unless they have specified other means of communication.
How will attendance be recorded on eLearning Days?
Attendance is counted when assignments are submitted.
What if I do not have internet connectivity?
If internet connectivity issues arise, please work with your building principal and your student’s classroom teacher for alternative plans.
Please stay in touch with your child’s teachers regarding assignments and work completion. The
bottom line is that we are in this together, and we want every student to succeed!
On another note, our lost and found is starting to pile up. If your child is missing any clothing
items, feel free to stop by and check what’s left before unclaimed items are removed.
Finally, as temperatures continue to drop, please ensure your child is dressed appropriately for
the weather. When temperatures fall below freezing, we are allowing parents to drive around the
circle to drop off and pick up students waiting inside. Our priority is keeping students safe and
warm!

From the 6th Grade
Even 6th graders love a good indoor snowball fight! Students in Mrs. Ariens’ ELA classes practiced their figurative language skills by battling to be the first one to collect 6 oxymoron examples on a recording sheet. So simple but so much fun!
Congratulations to the following 6th graders who received a shout-out from a classmate for this week:
Jayden Conn
Layne Conley
Sammy Minniti
These students were chosen based on their kindness, friendliness, and bringing joy to classmates.
Also, congratulations to Emmitt Wathen for being selected as Mrs. Ariens' "ELA Rockstar of the Week". Emmitt had a very good week in Mrs. Ariens' class by following directions, working hard on his assignments, asking questions, and participating in class. Great job, Emmitt!
Mrs. Sherwood's Class
6th grade engineering project #2: Paper roller coasters (tape, paper). All coasters had 3 or more Elements (drops, bunny hills, turns, twists, tunnels, etc).
All groups were AMAZING!
From 8th Grade Language Classes
This week in Mrs. Noah and Mrs. Hoog's 8th grade English classes, students have been working on propaganda projects where they were basically "selling" their chosen Disney characters as the opposite of the way the films portrayed or "sold" them. Lots of the kids have enjoyed working on the project, and their writing and art skills have both been quite impressive to see. Here are a few pics from after their presentations.
Congratulations Mrs. Osborne
Applied Skills teacher, Mrs. Osborne, welcomed a beautiful baby boy into the world on Friday February 14th! Congratulations to the Osborne family!
Preparing for College and Careers
Students in Mrs. Riffle's PCC class are learning about their unique personality traits and how important it is to learn how to work together and embrace our differences.
