During this time of year, we are typically in the midst of the Kindergarten registration process. It’s always been a pleasure to welcome students and families during a personalized registration experience. Unfortunately, in light of the COVID-19 concerns and the need for social distancing, this year, we must manage the registration process a little differently.
The safety and well-being of students are among our highest priorities. Therefore, we are limiting the in-person logistics for registration. The registration days scheduled for Hunt School on April 7 have been canceled. At this time, we are instead asking you to complete registration online.

Sneak a Peek Event in August
While we are unable to host an in-person registration event this spring, we still recognize the importance of welcoming our new families and helping our students acclimate to a new school. So, we’re asking all families to join us in August for a special “Sneak a Peek” in-person experience developed specifically for our transitional kindergarten and kindergarten students. At “Sneak a Peek,” students and families will get to visit the classroom, meet the teacher, and prepare for the start of the new school year. Please watch for more details about this event to come in a future letter.
This is the start of a very exciting journey for your child and family. Welcome to the Sioux City Community School District. We appreciate your support in completing the online registration process, and we look forward to meeting you in August. If you have any questions, please call Heidi at 712/279-6833.
SCCSD Baseball and Softball Plans
Dear Parents/Guardians and Students,
It is a pleasure to announce that all three high schools in the Sioux City Community School District will offer high school baseball and softball this summer. The season, for both sports, will begin on June 1. This announcement comes on the heels of the Iowa Governor’s approval to allow Iowa high school athletic programs to proceed with conducting 2020 summer seasons for baseball and softball.
The COVID-19 pandemic has changed how we all approach public events. Therefore, there will be some adjustments to the format of the events for spectators and athletes. The District will make all efforts to safeguard the health and well-being of our athletes, coaching staff, and patrons this season.
Spectators will be permitted to enter sports grounds to watch games. All spectators must bring their own chairs. The bleachers will not be open for public use. Spectators must adhere to social distancing guidelines and maintain six feet from fellow spectators in attendance. Additionally, there will be no concessions available during games.
Per guidance from the Iowa High School Athletic Association (IHSAA), all safety guidelines will be followed for disinfecting the sports equipment and athletic facilities. Teams will also follow IHSAA guidance on social distancing expectations for players as it relates to the dugout and practices.
Based on Governor Reynolds’ proclamation on May 6, all students are academically eligible to participate in competition. All other current rules regarding eligibility are maintained. Specific details regarding tryouts, practice schedules, and game schedules will be released from each high school in the near future. If a student is interested in trying out for baseball or softball, and has not already indicated interest to the coach, please contact the school activities director.

Sincerely,

Handle with Care Initiative Launches in Sioux City
The Sioux City Community School District is launching a new initiative, Handle with Care, in partnership with the Sioux City Police Department (SCPD). This initiative is part of an effort to further advance work to support the emotional needs of students. Handle with Care is an alert system set up to notify the District any time a police officer is dispatched to a student’s home. SCPD will NOT share any details about the call or police activity. The alert will only prompt the District officials to take actions to “handle the student with care” in the days following the call. School staff that closely interact with the student involved will be prompted to observe the student’s behavior. If the student exhibits signs that indicate distress or concern, a professional school counselor will support the student’s emotional needs. The Handle with Care program will launch on December 1, 2019. If you have questions about the program, please call:
· Jen Gomez, Sioux City Community School District: 712-279-6075
· Sgt. Jeremy McClure, Sioux City Police Department: 712-279-4981

Communication and Preparedness
Student and staff safety is of paramount importance in the Sioux City Community School District. For this reason, the District exercises a host of crisis prevention and planning tactics. Should an emergency occur, the school notifies you through our Blackboard phone system. In an emergency, the system calls every phone number associated with your child in order to reach you. The message will give you details about the emergency and provide directions on when/where to pick up your child if the normal school day is altered. Learn more about school safety.
