Weekly Digest: Home Office Edition
Franklin College Student Academic Services
July 27 - July 31, 2020
Welcome to the bitter of the summer everybody. It's hot, seats are filling, but at least AP scores are finally here. With the start of fall, we're winding down the home office assistant photos, but I could still use one or two more to get us through the end of the summer, so feel free to send me what you have if there's a coworker you'd like featured.
Please contact me at mjenn@uga.edu if you have suggestions or if there is anything you'd like me to include in the digest.
Home Office Assistant of the Week
Little Fella

For Advisors
Important Action Items
Webcams are here!
- For those that requested webcams, they've arrived and are in Jon's office.
- To use them, simply plug them into the USB of your computer.
- While we wanted the webcams to be available for advisors to use in their offices instead of their laptop webcams, if someone wants to pick up one early to use at home, that's okay. If you do, please email Jon.
Students taking off Fall semester
This is just a reminder that the process for students who wish to take fall semester off is different depending on their matriculation status.
- All incoming students who will matriculate at UGA for the first time this fall must enroll to maintain their UGA admission status. If you see a student with questions about this, or about how to defer, send them to Admissions.
- Students who have already matriculated at UGA (with the exception of dual enrollment students) can take off as many semesters as they choose. If they are gone for a year or more they'll have to reapply through the Registrar's Office. They won't be denied readmission; this is simply a means to update and reactivate their records.
Tentative Fall Important Dates Calendar
- A very tentative Fall Important Dates calendar is available now at the normal calendar link (https://docs.google.com/document/d/1F8y1nyysyHO3emcmDAv-Qys-tjUIyEtAW9zG3n7bu04/edit?usp=sharing).
- We are looking for people to lead/organize reading/discussion groups for Fall. These can be very casual (getting together with a few other folks just to have virtual coffee and discuss a topic) or more formal (like a book club). Up to you! Please let Mike (mervam@uga.edu) know if you are interested.
Please use full Zoom invitation information when communicating with students (from Julia Butler-Mayes)
- EOO states "It was recently discovered that hosting a Zoom meeting without providing the full invite, i.e. all of the sign-in methods, may unintentionally limit the participation of some members of our community.
- In order to ensure that all contacts have access to all methods of connectivity, you should always provide the entire list of connection options to meeting participants."
Orientation Information
Appointments Next Week
- Kellee asks that if you are able, please put out orientation advising appointments the first week of August.
- Two additional OL small group meetings are scheduled next week on 8/3 and 8/4 for those students who were unable to complete a group in June or July.
OL Office Hours and Registration Help Ends
- This will be the final week for Orientation Leader online office hours and registration help.
- You can still refer students to Jenny's registration help on Monday and Thursday afternoons from 3pm to 4pm, and to Grayson and Ashton's registration help times on Tuesday and Wednesday mornings from 10 am to 11 am.
We've passed 2000!
- Y'all, we've advised over 2000 incoming orientation students! The milestone was reached last Wednesday. You all rock. Also, special props to Kellee. Without her, this would have been much, much messier! I cannot stress enough how messy it would have been.
Fall Reopening Information and Updates
Link to new daily class schedule
- As you know, an additional 5 minutes has been added to the time between classes. This link takes you to the revised class schedule: https://reg.uga.edu/general-information/daily-class-schedule/
A Reminder: New trash handling procedures
- Building services personnel will not be going into individual offices to clean. FMD encourages office occupants to remove and discard their own trash and recycle material at the common area receptacles and take advantage of the sanitation station buckets with wipes to disinfect their personal space.
Extra Masks
- We'll have a stash of extra masks in Brooks to give to students who come in unmasked. Right now, we're thinking we'll stash them at the check-in desk. We don't have a lot of them, though, so they aren't for advisor use.
SGA Town Halls (thanks to Diane)
- The SGA Town Hall series addresses how testing will occur on campus, what emergency funds are available for students, and where students should go if they’re concerned about attending in-person classes.
- In particular, Diane recommends viewing the SCO section led by Carrie Smith. It begins at 52:34
- You can view the Town Hall here: https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=4tO_de17APc&feature=youtu.be

Philosophy Department Updates
The Department of Philosophy Pre-Law Track
- This track was designed with input from Law School professors. It is NOT a minor or certificate so it will not be on students' transcripts, but the department has put a lot of energy into making sure it is well-designed and that students will be interested in it. https://www.phil.uga.edu/department-philosophy-pre-law-track
- Note: A law-related minor may be coming, but not until next year.
The Department of Philosophy Philosophy AB/MA Double Dawgs Program.
Philosophy Service Learning Course
- Please be on the lookout for the first ever Service-Learning course ('Philosophy in Schools') sometime soon. The department thinks they will get special approval to teach it in the Spring.
NACADA Student Athlete Event
- In light of current events around the country, Will Lewis is coordinating a pre-recorded panel-style webinar on behalf of the NACADA/NCAA Advisory Board focused on the intersection of Dual Pandemics (COVID & Racism) and its effect on student-athletes - Student-Athlete Well-Being During Dual Pandemics: Enduring Racism & COVID-19. This panel will be pre-recorded to allow for viewing at a time that is convenient to all during this busy season. An announcement email will be sent out when it is available.
Will would value any questions that you may have on this topic for the panelists (names and biographies included in the survey). Please take a moment to complete this one-question anonymous survey. The survey will be available through Sunday, August 2, 2020. - Follow this link to the Survey:
