Message From Mr. Pertzborn
Dear Lodi Middle School Students and Families,
As we enter November, it is hard to believe the first quarter is coming to a close. We have so many things to be thankful for as we enter the holiday season. I am grateful for the amazing staff of Lodi Middle School that goes above and beyond to help students grow as people and learners. I am grateful for the outstanding kids we have an opportunity to work with every day. I am also grateful for the support of our families and community in being a partner in our children's education, safety, and well-being. We truly live in a great community!
Take care and see you soon!
Derek Pertzborn - Lodi Middle School, Principal

Speak Up Speak Out
Speak Up Speak Out is a tip line for anyone to anonymously report a safety issue within the school. Safety concerns may be a threat to our school, a threat to a student, bullying of students, or just concerns in general. Administration will follow up on tips that are provided.

Musical - Music Man
On Thursday, November 14, Lodi Middle School students will be walking to the high school to watch Lodi High School's performance of the musical Music Man. The show will begin at 12:30 pm and we will walk back in time to board the buses at the end of the school day. We are excited to attend this event because it allows students to have a unique experience, shows students what opportunities they will have in high school, and lets us practice social skills of attending a musical performance. In addition, we get to enjoy a great show!
Spelling Bee
Lodi Middle School will be running a school wide spelling bee beginning in early December. The spelling bee winner at the Lodi Middle School will then participate in a regional competition in February. Students who would like to participate will be provided words from their Language Arts teacher. Thanks to 8th Grade Language Arts teacher Patty Heinzmann and Library Assistant Laurie Gwynne for volunteering their time to organize this opportunity for our students.
Weather Changes and Recess
As the weather begins to change, please be sure that your child is bringing proper clothing to stay warm. We have had a beautiful fall so far, but we all realize that is going to be changing soon (except some middle school children :)). We will be sending students outside nearly every day for recess. The only reason students will not go outside is if it is raining or if the temperature is below 0 degrees (we will also take wind chill into account). Students are generally outside for recess for 10-20 minutes. If your student needs a jacket for winter please let me know and we will get them one. If you know of another student who might need one, please pass that information along my way.

How to Support My Child in Middle School - Homework
Families can support their middle school student with homework by creating a consistent, quiet workspace free from distractions, setting a regular schedule for study time, and encouraging breaks to prevent burnout. Checking in with the student about assignments helps them to stay organized, while offering guidance (rather than doing the work for them) fosters independence. Praising effort and progress, even if grades aren't perfect, builds confidence and motivation. Parents can also communicate with teachers to stay informed about expectations and use online tools to track assignments.
Therapy Dog - Welcome Chewy
We are excited that Chewy will be joining our students as a certified therapy dog. In addition to his work at Lodi Middle School, Chewy also volunteers at UW Children's Hospital as a part of the Caring Canines program. Students have been provided guidelines for interacting with our therapy dogs and we look forward to getting to know Chewy. Special thanks to Paula Tonn for sharing Chewy with Lodi Middle School.
Join Trail Trekkers Hiking Club for Middle Schoolers!
Do you like being outside and active with friends? Trail Trekkers might be for you!
The Trail Trekkers go on hikes each Wednesday after school throughout the school year. Each Wednesday, the Trail Trekkers hike a different part of the Ice Age Trail. It is a great opportunity for students to get some fresh air, exercise, and connect with peers.

Attendance Protocol
This is a reminder of the importance of reporting an absence if a student is going to be missing from school. Families can complete the Absence Form (button below) instead of calling or emailing the office; however, if you have questions or are unable to complete this form, you can still call the attendance line: (608) 592-3854 x 0 or email the school office at msoffice@lodischoolswi.org.
This form is also accessible through the Lodi Middle School Homepage with the link that says "Report an Absence" on the main page.
Attendance Matters
Regular attendance is crucial for middle school students because it builds good habits, ensures academic success, and strengthens social connections. Missing school can lead to gaps in learning, making it harder for students to keep up with lessons and stay engaged. Consistent attendance also helps students to develop responsibility and routines that prepare them for high school and beyond. When students are present, they benefit academically, form friendships, and fully participate in school activities, supporting their overall development. Your support in encouraging daily attendance makes a lasting difference.
Let us know if you need support in getting your student to school regularly.
Things to Ask Your Kids....(3 Questions Each Month)
Here are three questions to ask your teen this week to get them to open up:
1. What are some things happening in class or around school that you are excited about?
2. Is there anything you're finding tricky or need help with at school?
3. What was the best part of your day today?
Lodi Middle School Holiday Concert Treat Donations
The Lodi Music Boosters is a parent-driven group, working to provide funding for ALL levels of Music Education within the School District of Lodi. Our hope is for all students to have the opportunity to explore and love music, from Kindergarten through High School, and beyond. In recent years, the Lodi Music Boosters have been able to offset student and teacher costs for a variety of requests, including classroom needs, tuition for student clinics and camps, meals and ticket prices for field trips, Senior scholarships, and more. Your contribution of one dozen treats helps raise donations at our school concerts, so we may continue to provide funds for our young musicians.
Please click on this SignUpGenius and review the available slots. You may drop off your snacks or treats at the PAC Ticket Booth that day, before your child's scheduled performance time.
Thank you for your donation and continuing support of the Lodi Music Boosters!

Message from Food Service
Welcome Fall!
We sincerely apologize for the Cancellation of the chef visit in October. Our Chef had a death in the family. We will reschedule for another time I promise.
Our Great Apple Crunch was another success this year thanks to our wonderful local apple orchards. This year we bought our apples from Lapacek’s, Jasper Apples and SkiHi. They were all wonderful!
We also had some delicious Kale salad, 3 Bean sweet potato chili and chicken legs. Thank you to all who tried them! This month our Harvest of the month features are Kiwi, Sweet potato and rosemary. Please watch for them on the menu. We will also feature a Turkish Tortilla Hack. We will also be having our Thanksgiving dinner on Wednesday the 20 th . This is a chance for you to warm up for the real Thanksgiving! We will also be featuring a Chicken fried Beef Steak! Come and try some new things!
Some reminders for all-please do not bring your food from home into the kitchen. We have no way of knowing where the food was purchased. Do not bring food that you have already purchased back into the kitchen so we do not charge you twice! Please do not put food into your pockets. Use a tray if you have over 3 items so you do not drop them on the floor. If you drop food on the floor please pick it up so no slips and falls. Safety First!
Please use the Taher survey QR code posted everywhere to fill out a short survey so we know what you want on your food menus. We really want your feedback so please take the time and let us know what you think.
Last but not least please make sure not to throw away your silverware! We just put out all new
silverware and we are finding about 5-10 pieces a day in the trash. Also, please do not throw the trays away. These items are very costly. Gum on the trays has been another issue. It does not come off the trays and then when we scrub the trays it ruins them. We know everyone wants to do their part to keep costs down and we appreciate your cooperation!
Thanks for all your continued support!

Message From School Nurse
I am including information below that was sent out in all families in Infinite Campus on October 18th. As of now we currently have confirmed cases at the High School. Primary Providers are continuing to test those who present with symptoms. Currently, we have no positive cases in the other buildings.
Pertussis (Whooping Cough):
Pertussis is a very contagious bacterial infection that can spread through close contact when people with the disease cough. Symptoms can appear 5 to 21 days after infection. It usually starts like a common cold (e.g., sneezing, runny nose, etc.) followed by a cough that gets worse over one to two weeks. People with Pertussis may have coughing spells in which they can’t catch their breath between coughs. Some may loudly gasp (“whoop”) and vomit or feel like they’re choking.
If your child has Pertussis like symptoms:
Please, contact your healthcare provider. Please have your provider write a note to clear your child when they can return to school.
If your student has recently been evaluated and tested for potentially having pertussis:
Per State Guidelines and Public Health, your student will need to be at home while awaiting the test result or until they have completed 5 days of the prescribed antibiotic treatment.
If the result comes back positive:
The local Health Department and School Nurse will contact you before your student can return back to school.
Prevention Steps To Help Prevent Illness:
Clean Your Hands:
Washing hands often will help protect from germs. If soap and water are not available, use alcohol-based hand sanitizer. CDC: Handwashing Facts
Cover Your Mouth and Nose:
Covering your mouth and nose with a tissue when coughing or sneezing. It helps to prevent those around you from getting sick.
Avoid Touching Eyes, Nose, Mouth
Germs can spread when a person something that is contaminated with germs then touches their eyes, nose, or mouth.
Stay Home When You Are Sick:
This helps prevent spreading illness to others.
Practice Other Good Healthy Habits:
Clean and disinfect frequently used surfaces, especially when someone is sick. Get plenty of sleep, drink plenty of fluids, manage stress, get enough sleep, and eat nutritious foods.
Vaccinations:
When children and their families are vaccinated, it helps protect the risk of getting seriously ill.
Other Resources:
Wisconsin Wayfinder: Children’s Resource Network helps assist families, caregivers, professionals, and organizations in finding a wide array of supports and services.

Lost and Found
Not sure where that sweatshirt went? Don’t know where that water bottle is? Each month we will post pictures of lost and found items. If you have an item from one of these pictures, please email Dawn Maier (maierda@lodischoolswi.org) to let her know which item is yours or have your student stop in the office.
Lodi Santa Project
Hello Families,
Each year, families in our district are offered support during the holiday season through the Lodi Santa Project. This project has been around for 30+ years providing local families in need with gifts, cold weather gear and other necessities anonymously for those who might otherwise go without. Last year we helped over 40 families with more than 100 children. These are especially difficult times for many families in our community. If you, or any family that you know who are part of the Lodi School District would benefit from this project, please reach out to the program coordinator, Pam Cunningham, directly via email at lodisantaproject@gmail.com. All information is kept strictly confidential.
Families who would like to support the Lodi Santa Project financially or who would like to sponsor a child or family can also contact Pam at the email address above. Monetary donations as well as donations such as socks, mittens, hats, books, teen friendly gift cards, board games, crafts, etc. are always appreciated!
Charge Chromebooks
Students need to charge their Chromebook each night so that it is ready for the next school day. Please make sure that your child is doing this each night. If a student cannot find their charger, please contact tech support at techsupport@lodischoolswi.org.
