lead4ward Instructional Strategies Playlists
The lead4ward Instructional Strategies Playlists are designed to provide teachers with detailed descriptions of specific, instructional strategies, many of which are modeled and experienced in lead4ward professional development sessions. This resource is intended to support educators in using an intentional planning process that includes delivering instruction that is aligned to the TEKS, promotes student engagement, and teaches for access, rigor, and transfer. Teachers use instructional strategies to:
- engage learners
- provide practice without penalty
- encourage interaction among students
- see and hear students’ thinking

INSTRUCTIONAL STRATEGIES WEEKLY SPOTLIGHT
ODD ONE OUT
This strategy can be used in so many ways! It can be used during initial instruction for checking of understanding or it can be used to analyze any assessment items. The justification piece of this strategy is the most important. If students are able to verbalize their thinking, they are more likely to be successful in their learning.
Odd Man Out also provides an opportunity for students to get up and move around.
FOCUSED LISTING
This strategy is a great way to assess prior knowledge about an upcoming topic OR it can be used to review concepts prior to an assessment. Focused Listing is similar to a chalk-talk, in that students will walk around the room and write everything they know about the topic on an assigned poster. Students will also review the statements of others by including check marks by the words/ideas they agree with, or drawing a line through any ideas that may be a mistake or faulty connection.
SORTING A COLUMN
Purpose: To help facilitate data analysis, information can be sorted into ascending or descending order. To sort a column in Aware in ascending order, click on the column header. To sort in descending order, click on the column heading again.
