New Year's Message from Board President Mrs. Sophia Tse
Dear ABC Families,
Happy New Year! I am excited about the promise that 2024 holds for our students and schools. We continue to work hard to make sure all of our students have the resources they need to be successful. We are so blessed to have such talented teachers, dedicated staff, and engaged families who work together with a focus on student achievement.
We have so much to look forward to this year, from the completion of construction projects funded through Measure BB to increased funding for the arts through Proposition 28. Although we will face challenges, I know that we will get through them together, focusing on what’s best for our students.
Again, I want to wish you a happy 2024 full of joy, peace, and prosperity. I hope to see you at a school event or board meeting.
Sincerely,
Sophia Tse
President
ABCUSD Board of Education
School Facilities Capacities & Declining Enrollment Ad Hoc Committee Meeting
The School Facilities Capacities & Declining Enrollment Ad Hoc Committee began meeting this past May and has been looking at data and trends to identify the best ways to utilize our schools as we face declining enrollment. The next committee meeting is scheduled for Wednesday, January 17, 2024, at 6:00 p.m. in the ABC District Office Board Room. The public is welcome and encouraged to attend.
Our Schools Celebrate the Holidays
From musicals written by teachers to performances by school musical groups to our youngest learners singing holiday classics, schools across the District celebrated the holidays in special ways before the winter break.
Artesia Students Compete at JPL
Last month, eight students from Artesia High School competed in the Inventors Challenge held by NASA’s Jet Propulsion Laboratory after placing 4th at a regional competition. The students designed a robot that put paper into a trashcan in the fastest way possible using a specified number of energy transfers. The Atresia team placed 7th overall, getting paper into the trashcan in 2.18 seconds! Well done, Pioneers!

Traveled to Mexico? Be Aware of Rocky Mountain Spotted Fever
If you or your child recently traveled to Tecate, Mexico, or other regions in northern Mexico, please be aware that several people have recently been hospitalized with Rocky Mountain Spotter Fever (RMSF) after being bitten by a tick. This disease is spread through the bite of infected ticks and can be serious. The Centers for Disease Control has more information about this disease online.
Thank You, Cerritos Chamber of Commerce
Before winter break, the Cerritos Chamber of Commerce and its members donated new toys, clothes, shoes, and more to the ABC Community Resource Center. The Center, located at Fedde Middle School, provides items for free to students in need to ensure they have what they need to come to school. Thank you to the Chamber and its members for their generous support.
