Championing Positive Values: RSU 16’s Approach to Athletic Excellence
In RSU 16, we are committed to maintaining a safe, respectful, and positive environment for all students involved in athletics, and preventing misbehavior is a priority we address through a variety of actions.
1. Parent and Coach Engagement: At the start of each year, we hold meetings with parents, coaches, and teams to discuss the core values of "educational athletics" and "building culture." These meetings, held regularly throughout the year, establish clear expectations for everyone involved.
2. Expectations and Accountability: We set and communicate player expectations, emphasizing values like being on time, working hard, being a good teammate, and always striving to "Do the Right Thing." Our captains are also required to complete National Federation of High Schools (NFHS) Learn courses on leadership, reinforcing the importance of positive role modeling and integrity.
3. Close Adult Supervision: Parents, teachers, and ed techs serve as coaches, paid staff, and volunteers, providing close supervision. Coaches are present in the locker rooms, conduct walk-throughs, and ensure a respectful environment, particularly during key times like re-entry after games and practices.
4. Roundtable Connection: Our Roundtable program, where students meet daily with the same teacher and group from middle school through high school, ensures that each student has trusted adults to turn to. This consistent, four-year relationship fosters a culture of open communication, support, and accountability.
5. Culture and Community Building: We know that culture is vital, and we are intentional in creating an environment we can all be proud of. Our athletic director’s dedication to thoughtful details—such as selecting family-friendly music and encouraging students to take pride in their spaces—reinforces our values and creates a positive atmosphere for everyone involved.
RSU 16’s athletics program remains dedicated to providing a safe, supportive, and inclusive space where students can thrive.
Math by Example Training
Some PCS teachers participated in Math by Example Training. Math by Example is a program for grades 4 and 5 that allows students to learn mathematical concepts primarily through analyzing and explaining solved problems (worked examples), focusing on identifying common misconceptions and errors by comparing correct and incorrect solutions. This helps students deepen their understanding of mathematical concepts.

Elm Street School Garden
This past summer Elm Street School was able to start their school garden with a little help from some local companies. The Learned Brothers donated a load of loam to help fill our three garden beds and Coast of Maine donated 10 bags of organic raised bed mix to top them off. The students were able to learn about gardening during summer school and even into the school year. Ms. Kelley's 3rd grade class just cleaned up the garden beds and made sure they are ready to grow so many more vegetables next spring. #GrowingGoodProgram #GrowingGoodwill

PRHS Maine Forests, Fish & Wildlife Class
Mr. Martin’s Maine Forests, Fish & Wildlife classes were out in the field last week.
A big PRHS thank you to the guest speakers: Androscoggin Soil and Water Conservation District scientists and Maine Department of Inland Fisheries and Wildlife biologists.
At Elm Street School's October whole-school assembly students from each grade were recognized for their efforts in promoting a positive classroom community! Congratulations to the Community Helper Award recipients. These students participated in some fun activities and our Wildcat surprised us with a monthly mascot challenge. Classes will decorate their class mascot (a white basketball) for each assembly and three guest judges will pick the winning class each month! We wrapped up the assembly by announcing the Penny Wars fundraiser results! Thank you to all of our amazing families who generously donated $1,956.41!
