San Juan Unified School District community returns for the 2024-25 school year
When the school bells rang for the first class of the 2024-25 school year, students from all 64 of our school sites eagerly rushed into classrooms where staff warmly welcomed them to a new year. Looking forward to the year ahead, school communities are reflecting on how they can make a positive impact this year.

Arcade Middle School to cut ribbon on full-campus replacement project
It’s time to cut the ribbon on Arcade Middle School’s full-campus replacement project! Join the Arcade community on Thursday, Sept. 19 at 5 p.m. in Arcade’s outdoor stage area to celebrate this highly-anticipated milestone. Those interested in attending this event can RSVP through this form.
Arcade’s ribbon-cutting ceremony will feature student and staff speakers, a band performance and an opportunity to tour the newly modernized campus after the ceremony. This event will precede Arcade’s Back-to-School night.

San Juan Unified School District welcomes two new principals this school year
San Juan Unified School District is excited to welcome two new principals to our district.
Kaden Bahner, who previously served as an assistant principal at Woodcreek High School in Roseville, joins Mira Loma High School as its new principal. Learn more about Bahner in this short video.
Trajan Elementary School is excited to welcome Jennifer Mickelson, who comes from St. Paul, Minnesota, where she spent time as a teacher, literacy coach and principal. Learn more about Mickelson in this short video.
Historically Black Colleges and Universities Recruitment Fair is on Sept. 12
San Juan Unified School District, in partnership with the United College Action Network (U-CAN), will be hosting the annual Historically Black Colleges and Universities (HBCU) Recruitment Fair on Thursday, Sept. 12 from 1:30 to 3:30 p.m. at El Camino Fundamental High School. 11th and 12th-grade San Juan Unified students are invited to attend this event.
College representatives from over 30 HBCUs will be offering financial aid information, on-the-spot admissions letters and scholarships to qualified 12th-grade students. To maximize the chances of being chosen for these opportunities, students should bring five to seven copies of their transcripts.
Transportation will be provided for students from each high school site. Students taking the bus will need a field trip form completed and returned to their student’s school counselors. Please contact your school counselor for access to the field trip form.
San Juan Unified to kick off College Week on Sept. 23
San Juan Unified will host a variety of opportunities this month to help students explore educational options and prepare for post-secondary success. College Week kicks off its college-readiness celebrations starting Sept. 23.
Many in-person events and on-campus activities will take place, including:
Monday, Sept. 23 - College door decorating
Tuesday, Sept. 24 - Virtual college visits
Wednesday, Sept. 25 - What To Be/CTE Wednesday
Thursday, Sept. 26 - College Night at Rio Americano High School
Friday, Sept. 22 - Dress in your college gear for a spirit day

Celebrate San Juan Education Foundation's STARS Hall of Fame honorees on Oct. 11
The STARS Hall of Fame, founded in 2009 by the San Juan Education Foundation in collaboration with San Juan Unified School District, proudly celebrates outstanding alumni who have emerged as distinguished leaders in their respective fields.
The 2024 STARS Hall of Fame honorees are:
Alexandra Huynh, Mira Loma High School 2020 - 5th National Youth Poet Laureate of the United States
Skip Maggiora, Encina High School 1965 - Founder of Skip's Music
Wayne Woo, Bella Vista High School 1988 - Placer County Sheriff
Liliana Ferrer, Del Campo High School 1980 - Ambassador of Mexico to Thailand, concurrent in Cambodia
You are invited to celebrate at the STARS Hall of Fame induction ceremony during the "An Evening with the Stars" gala on Friday, Oct.11 at the Citrus Heights Community Center from 6:30 to 9:30 p.m.

Families are invited to these upcoming workshops in September:
Starting a Successful School Year Together - Thursday, Sep. 5 from 5:30 - 6:30 p.m. via Zoom - Join us for this informative virtual forum to learn about tips and strategies to support home-to-school communication, school attendance awareness, fostering positive learning habits, and navigating tools such as Parent Portal, school websites and more.
Parent Project - A Parenting Support Program - Begins Wednesday, Sept. 11 from 5:45 - 7:45 p.m. at Sylvan Middle School - This ten-session program is created by parents, for parents, to help support households who are struggling with difficult teen behavior. In this class, participants will learn strategies to help nurture positive home communication, reduce family conflict, and improve difficult teen behavior.
Talleres Familiares - Thursday, Sept. 19 from 5:30 - 7:30 p.m. at San Juan High School - This workshop is presented in Spanish for families and community members. Explore tips and tools to support a successful start to the school year for your student.
A Special Education Community Social is taking place on Thursday, Sept. 12 from 4-6 p.m. at Arden Middle School. Families and staff can join to explore district and community resources, connect with district staff and community partners, build connections, and engage with the new special education leaders and Community Advisory Committee members. A free BBQ dinner, disability resource fair and sensory room for breaks will be available.

Family tip of the month: Instill a love of learning
Students who are motivated by their own desire to learn retain what they learn longer and earn higher grades. To encourage this:
Ask your child to consider, “What do I want to learn from this assignment?”
Help your child recognize progress. Offer positive feedback.
Help your child pursue learning interests.
