CIS Weekly Updates

I'm delighted to see our students off to such an incredible start, fully engaged in learning new routines. This has truly been one of the best starts since I've been at CIS! I'm eagerly looking forward to witnessing the evolution of this school year, and I wholeheartedly believe that we have a very special group of students in 5th and 6th grade.

Our parent/guardian open house is scheduled for this Thursday, August 29th. The 5th-grade session is from 5:45-7:00 pm and the 6th-grade session follows from 7:15-8:30 pm. Starting in OJ Work Auditorium, we'll guide you to your child's homeroom class after a brief presentation. This event is exclusively for parents/guardians, and we are eager to meet you and share more about the upcoming school year!

Expect our Weekly Updates every week, typically on Monday evenings. These updates are designed to keep you informed and serve as a valuable resource throughout the school year. They will be sent via email and through Remind.

Thursday evening will be our CIS open house for parents only. Parents will meet in OJ Work Auditorium for a brief presentation of information and will then be dismissed to meet their student's teachers. The times are as follows:

5th grade parents - begins at 5:45pm - ends at 7:00pm

6th grade parents - begins at 7:15pm - ends at 8:30pm

You can help! Throughout the year we collect food items listed below and send bags home over the weekend for students in need. Please consider helping in this way because our students and families really appreciate the extra food over the weekends.

We are so grateful you are a part of the school community this year. One of the aims at our school is to equip young people for all the realities of today’s world. With that in mind, we have partnered with CharacterStrong - an organization that provides training for educators and social & emotional learning curriculum for students. Their work will focus on 3 main outcomes: increasing a sense of belonging for all students, improving skills that support student well-being, and deepening student engagement in their academics, in their school, and in their community.

This curriculum was created to support school communities as they engage in the work of preparing young people to thrive in the 21st century. The research supports the effectiveness of social & emotional learning in schools to increase student’s academic success and college & career readiness. The lessons focus on developing skills and mindsets around building positive habits, understanding our emotions, and increasing empathy for people and communities who have lived different lives than us. The curriculum helps students think about things they want to improve in their school, their relationships, and their world and then provides tools for them to work individually and in teams to close the gaps they’ve identified.

One of the key parts of nearly every lesson is the “CharacterDare” for students. These are invitations near the end of most lessons to put the content that they are learning into action in the real world. If you ever want to play an active role in the CharacterStrong curricula, simply ask your student about the most recent CharacterDare. Maybe they’ll invite you to try one yourself! Our attendance clerk, Mrs. Long, is the contact person for calling off your student and any change of dismissal plans throughout the day. Please call the Attendance Line to reach her and leave a message. The phone number to her desk is 330-335-1481. We recommend you let the attendance desk/teacher know when your student will be absent, leaving early, or arriving late. Letting us know when your child will leave early allows us to be prepared for when you arrive. We ask that all end-of-the-day dismissal plans be made by 2:45 p.m. Thank you for your efforts!
