A Message from Mrs. Hardwicke
Hello Students and Families,
This week, our school is hosting a Scholastic Book Fair. Students can bring money to shop at our Book Fair during Trojan Time each day or during their ELA classes. This is a wide variety of books, journals, and speciality items that are available. Scholastic Book Fairs are great ways to help our school earn more money for books and items for our library.
We will also be celebrating the Book Fair with some fun spirit days.
Monday: Red, White, and Blue Day
Tuesday: Favorite Band or Performer Day
Wednesday: Neon Day
Thursday: Wild West Day
Friday: DC or Marvel Day
There will be contests for students to win a poster or book for $7.00 or less. Coloring sheets will be available for students to color in the media and submit. Two fifth grade winners and two sixth grade winners will be chosen. A jar of candy will be at the fair for students to estimate. Every time a student purchases items at the fair, they can enter their name into a drawing. Winners' names will be announced at the end of the book fair on Friday.

Veterans Day Program
Today, our school community gathered to honor the brave men and women who have served in the United States military during our annual Veterans Day program. It was a moving and meaningful event. We were grateful to welcome Mr. Mike Okeley, the Director of Facilities for Duneland School Corporation, as our guest speaker. Mr. Okeley, a veteran himself, shared inspiring words that reminded us of the sacrifices made by those who have defended our freedom.
Reese Ramker was our student host for the event. During the program, we highlighted essays and poems written by Cameron Law, Liam Myers, Jacoby Wallace, Lila Guljas, and Harriet Hennigar. Our performing arts students also took the stage to perform patriotic songs that captured the spirit of the day.
A special thank you goes to our dedicated general music teacher, Mrs. Plant, for organizing this event. Her hard work and commitment to honoring our veterans made this program a memorable one.
We are proud of our students, staff, and community for coming together to pay tribute to those who have served and continue to serve our country. Thank you to all our veterans for your service and sacrifice.
A Note of Gratitude
Please consider taking a moment to share a quick note to our staff members by clicking the link below below.
LIS Spiritwear Shop
PTO has opened up a spiritwear shop online. Orders can be placed throughout the year.
Candy Collection for U.S. Troops
Once again, Hurst Orthodontics, PC will collect Halloween candy in our schools to be donated to a non-profit organization called Supporters of the Military (SOM). For the last 22 years, the candy has been shipped to US soldiers serving both domestic and abroad. This year many Indiana veterans will also enjoy the candy. Many of the candy recipients have been Indiana National Guard members, as well as members of the US Army, Air Force, Navy and Marines.
Last year Hurst Orthodontics, PC, with the help of local schools, other community organizations and the public collected a total of 632 pounds of candy for the troops.
Candy donation boxes will be placed in each school beginning on Tuesday, October 29 - November 7. Donations from the public are welcome. Letters and cards for the troops from the students would be very welcome as well.
Congratulations Mrs. Smith, LIS Instructional Coach
Congratulations to Mrs. Smith, who is our very own Instructional Coach at the 5-8 Liberty Campus. Mrs. Smith is one of four Indiana finalists in the running for the nationally prestigious PAEMST award. The Presidential Awards for Excellence in Mathematics and Science Teaching (PAEMST) is the highest recognition that a kindergarten through 12th grade science, technology, engineering, or mathematics teacher may receive for outstanding teaching in the United States.

SEL Focus - Self-Worth
Self-Worth
• Self-worth is the belief in one’s own value as a human being and the sense of one’s preciousness and pricelessness. When people have positive self-worth, they believe that they are worthy of being seen, heard, and valued. It is the opposite of shame.
• Self-esteem is different, as it is driven from the satisfaction in one’s performance (e.g., positive feedback on a completed task).
• When people with positive self-worth perform poorly, they can bounce back more easily knowing that they still have worth and value despite their performance. However, when someone with low self-worth performs poorly, they experience deeper shame and are more likely to move into survival behaviors (fight, flight, freeze).
Application at Home (if desired):
1. To help your teens build positive self-worth, make an effort to meet their needs (emotional and physical) consistently. Delight in them (take an interest, laugh at their jokes, praise them), and show them that you see them, you hear them, and that they matter.
2. Let your teens know that even when they make mistakes, they still have worth and value. Tell yourself this, too!
Staff Spotlight - Mrs. Wood
Mrs. Wood is one of our new sixth grade teachers at LIS this year. She teaches ELA and Social Studies on a team with Mrs. Hicks. She is a IUPUI graduate. Mrs. Wood loves building positive connections with her students and helping them find a love for reading. She said that many students come into 6th grade not loving to read. She tries to share her passion for literature with her students throughout the year so they to will find joy in reading, too. She is such a wonderful addition to our staff. Thank you for everything you do for our students.
Favorite Color: Purple
Favorite Food: Ramen
Favorite Subject as a Student: History and Art
Favorite Hobby: Painting
An interesting fact about Mrs. Wood is that she loves to go hiking. They applied and got a permit to hike The Wave in Arizona and Utah.
Special Education Parent Advisory Meeting Date Changed

A Message from our Nurses
Injured Students and Medical Devices
As part of our commitment to ensuring the safety and well-being of all our students, we want to inform you about an important update regarding students who are injured and wearing medical devices such as walking boots, crutches, casts, slings, or splints. Effective immediately, any student with a medical device will be required to provide a doctor’s note confirming that they are cleared to participate in both gym class and recess. If a doctor advises against participation for any specified duration, the student will need to provide a subsequent note from the doctor clearing the student to resume these activities once they are healed.
This update is designed to ensure that all students can safely engage in physical activities while also considering their health and recovery. If you have any questions or need further clarification, please do not hesitate to reach out to the Health Clinic. Thank you for your cooperation and support.
