Winter Retreat 2022
Overview & Orientation
Countdown: 5 days
I want to remind you what Winter Retreat means for us here at CBC Youth. There are 2 main things:
- A retreat is a part of our whole discipleship process. And if I can explain discipleship again: discipleship is something that all Christians take part in as they have given their allegiance to their Lord Jesus Christ. Their discipleship is a life-long process that is both the intentional steps of becoming like Christ and the intentional steps of rejecting things that take away from that relationship and growth. The endgame of discipleship is that a person becomes "mature" in Christ (Colossians 1:28). So...retreat is one of the many ways we program as a part of this overall discipleship process.
- A retreat is the midpoint event of the school year. Seems obvious. It serves as a culmination of the Fall semester and a recap of things we've tried to accomplish. It also serves as a launch point for the Spring as well. Makes sense right? In light of those things, we don't want to treat the retreat as a camp or a conference. We actually want to spend time "retreating." To retreat from the daily anxiety of school, clubs, social media, and other stuff that saps our life. We want to spend time processing and evaluating and getting our minds and hearts on a healthy trajectory. We want to spend time reinforcing and building our internal community here at CBC between youth and youth and youth and leaders and leaders and leaders.
***COUNSELORS***
The following is for you who are counselors/mentors/leaders. You ready? Good
- We gots 44 people coming. And it looks like it's about a 2:1 student/adult ratio which is crazy awesome. Before you go into logistics mode, don't worry, i'll explain how it'll play out in a second. Just celebrate the fact that we get to spend intentional time in community and discipleship with 43 other brothers and sisters yeah? So right now, pause, pray for these 44 people who you "get to" do life with. Pray for their hearts and souls. Pray for God to meet them where they're at and heal and save and refresh.
- We're formalizing the roles and responsibilities in real-time so be patient with us as far as what you're going to be doing. I promise you most of the stuff there's no real "preparation" because it really should be just an overflow of what's in your heart at the moment. However, i've given some of the "older" counselors the option of running in the background (food, cleaning, runners, etc.) For the most part, many of you will be on the ground with the students at various parts of the day discipling them.
- MUY IMPORTANTE! I want this retreat to reinforce what the Church "ought" to look like on a given week. What this means is that I don't care much about the "camp feel" or the "conference vibe." What that means is that I don't want to do something at retreat that they won't practice back at home. Does that make any sense? What Christian discipleship looks like is simply practicing together spiritual growth and spiritual habits. Of course at retreat it's going to be a little different in how that happens but still, retreat can't be the end all be all for the students. Make sense?
- For some of yall you're going to not "feel" connected to a lot of people simply because you've been away or you don't know many of the people there. For some of you yo'u're going to be way too comfortable with other leaders. I need both of yall to balance this yeah? You're there to help students grow and learn how to mature as a community. This is both formal and informal teaching and intentional talking and mentoring. But for some of you, please hear my heart and love for you, please please don't huddle up with your close buddies the whole time and intentionally/unintentionally build cliques (cuz we've been trying to kill the walls of division all semester long). Translate that for me? Ok, what I mean is this...please love ALL the youth present. Nothing wrong with having those whom you're familiar with or close to or related to. But make sure to talk, pray, love ALL the students there. You are the adult. You take the initiative. It WILL be awkward. But love ALL of them. All of them are OUR responsibility. Then once you have led out in that example...teach your students to do the same.
