Classroom Spotlight: Science
6th Grade- Exploring Weather and Climate
In this unit, students will build on their understanding of energy and matter from the previous lessons to investigate weather and climate. They will ask questions, collect data, and develop models to explain why weather changes occur and how they are influenced by complex interactions of energy. By studying atmospheric and oceanic circulation patterns, students will learn how these factors determine regional climates across the globe. Key questions for exploration include: What factors influence climate? Why do different locations experience different climate conditions? Why doesn’t water on Earth ever get used up? How do energy and matter interact to produce different weather patterns?
7th Grade- Exploring the Wonders of Chemistry
In this unit, students are diving into the fascinating world of chemistry! They’ll explore the significance of the periodic table of elements and learn how to distinguish between physical and chemical changes. Through hands-on experiments, students will combine substances and determine whether a chemical or physical reaction has occurred, backed by solid evidence. A key concept they will study is the Law of Conservation of Mass, understanding how chemical reactions work like equations and how mass is conserved throughout. Students will also learn how atoms are rearranged during reactions, using virtual simulations to observe these changes on a molecular level.
8th Grade- Biology
In this unit, students will explore how the different systems in the human body work together to maintain a stable and balanced internal environment, known as homeostasis. They will learn how feedback mechanisms help the body respond to both internal and external changes, such as regulating body temperature and controlling blood sugar levels.
By studying examples like thermoregulation and blood sugar balance, students will gain a deeper understanding of how our bodies stay in a dynamic equilibrium that supports life. This knowledge helps them appreciate the incredible ways our body systems work together to keep us healthy and functioning.
