Newtown Public Schools
Weekly Update - September 9, 2024
Message from the Superintendent
Dear Newtown Families, Faculty and Staff,
Our students confidently eased into full days of school last week. Depending on the level, their days consisted of reinforcing expectations and routines, taking beginning of the year assessments, and at our upper level, engaging in actual assignments. After the relaxed days of summer, it is important to support the routines of school at home by establishing your own routines. These routines can be simple, a set time for homework, dinner, bedtime and waking time are good places to start. It’s okay if these change every day depending upon your family’s schedule - Monday’s routine might look different than Tuesdays, and that’s okay. The idea is to help your child(ren), regardless of their age, get into a rhythm that supports their primary job - school. Of utmost importance is that they attend school regularly. That is where they will find the most support for their learning. Our schools are better when our kids are in them. If you are experiencing difficulty getting your child to school, please reach out to your principal or school counselor for support.
This upcoming week is what we refer to as “drill week”. This is when our schools run through all of our safety procedures to ensure our students know what to do in the event of an emergency. By week's end, students will have practiced the following drills: Fire, Safe School Mode, Shelter-In-Place, Lock-down and Evacuation. If you have any questions or concerns specific to your child, please feel free to reach out to their principal.
On a personal note, last Tuesday, my husband and I received an early morning call from our daughter alerting us that she was in labor. After taking care of some business, we headed to Massachusetts Tuesday afternoon to wait for the arrival of our first grandchild. Many hours later, late Wednesday morning, we welcomed Maeve Cecelia Donahue to our family! We are filled with gratitude for this wonderful bundle of joy!
Enjoy your week!
Anne

Join the PTA
More than just fundraising!
Did you know that joining your PTA offers several benefits for both you and our school community? Our PTAs do many wonderful things throughout the school year that support and enhance the educational experience for our students. In addition to raising funds for educational programs and classroom resources, members have the opportunity to have their voices and ideas heard, meet new people and build connections within the school and greater community, as well as gain leadership skills that can be both personally and professionally valuable. In addition, being involved in your PTA gives you a closer look at what is happening in your child’s school by participating in or organizing events that foster a positive school culture.
You can find a link to each school's PTA by clicking on this link.
Thank you for your support!
