News from Arbor View Elementary School: 2/14/25
Weekly review and upcoming information
From Principal McCray
February is here. The BESS assessment for our students in 3rd, 4th, and 5th grade will be taking place in February (more info below).
Thank you to our PTC for a lovely Valentine's Day Dance. It was a big hit with our families.
As a reminder, dogs are not allowed in and around school areas. This includes bus stops. We ask families to be mindful of this as some students and families may have allergic reactions to them.
Let's go Roadrunners!
News you can use
All schools closed February 17 for Presidents’ Day
All Community Consolidated School District 89 schools and the district office will be closed on Monday, February 17, for President’s Day. All buildings will be open on a regular schedule on Tuesday, February 18.
No students will be in school on Friday, Friday, February 28, for a Teacher Institute Day. School will resume on a regular schedule on Monday, March 3.
All Abilities Fair: March 6
Arbor View is planning to host an All Abilities Fair on Thursday, March 6, with the support of FAIR625. FAIR625 is a local organization aimed at fostering acceptance, inclusion, and respect through an immersive education. They work with schools to implement an All Abilities Fair with hands-on activities to help students gain a better understanding of differences and disabilities. In order to make this event possible, we need adult volunteers to help lead the stations. This will be a wonderful opportunity for students to experience empathy and compassion in action.
We need 20 volunteers in the morning to run stations for first, second, and third grades; and 20 volunteers in the afternoon to run stations for fourth and fifth grades. You can help at both if you want! Kindergarten station times are from 9 to 10 a.m. in the library and will need four volunteers.
What does it mean to volunteer?
- Each volunteer will be at one station.
- Students will cycle through your station to learn.
- You will lead the activity using a given script.
- Stations will include fine-motor, sensory, learning differences, emotional regulation, and visual impairment.
- You can sign up for morning, afternoon, or both!
Sign up for volunteering using this link today!
If you are interested in helping or want to know more, email Arbor View teacher Morgan Aiello (maiello@ccsd89.org) and/or Maddy Potempa (mpotempa@ccsd89.org), the CCSD 89 organizer. We can’t wait for this new event!

Make sure your contact info is up to date
When school buildings need to close due to extreme weather, information will be released through a phone message, as well as the district’s website (www.ccsd89.org) and Facebook page (facebook.com/CCSD89). The district’s messaging system uses contact info supplied by guardians, so it is important you contact the school secretary and update your records if they have changed. Even when school is open, students should dress for the cold. Students will continue to go outside for recess as long as the weather remains above 10 degrees.

Students in third, fourth, and fifth grades will participate in BESS screener
CCSD 89 is committed to helping all students grow academically while also developing life skills that will help them be successful adults. In order to better measure students’ ability to manage emotions and make good decisions, CCSD 89 students in third, fourth, and fifth grades will be participating in the Behavioral and Emotional Screening System (commonly known as BESS) in February.
BESS is not a tool for making a diagnosis and there is no grade associated with it. BESS will give the school data about how your child internalizes risk, self-regulates, and establishes good relationships. More info: https://www.ccsd89.org/Page/8952

Resources for helping your child through difficult times
Tragedy can affect a nation or a single family. Some crises happen suddenly while others build over time. Each situation can be difficult for children to understand and challenging for families to navigate. Our school has a counselor, social worker, and psychologist available to help students and families with strategies for transparent, age-appropriate conversations.
