California Healthy Kids Survey for 5th grade students
5th grade students will be taking the California Healthy Kids Survey the week of April 7 - April 11. This is a survey that requires parental consent. Please be on the lookout this week for information via Aeries communication regarding the CHKS survey as well as a permission slip that will need to be signed and returned by a parent or guardian.
Important information about being on time to school
Student tardies are on the rise at BES. Each day, the first bell rings at 8:10 a.m., signaling the students and staff the it is time to prepare for the day. Students are in class by the second bell which rings at 8:15 a.m. As a courtesy, our site gives students a 5 minute grace period. We leave the front gates open until 8:20. At that point, your student will need to go to the office for a tardy slip, which is recorded in each student's attendance log in our Aeries Student Information System.
At BES, we want every student to start their day feeling prepared, confident, and ready to learn! Arriving on time to school is a key part of setting students up for success. When students are on time, they can settle into their routine, connect with their teacher and classmates, and fully engage in morning instruction—an important part of the school day.
Tardiness can be disruptive not only to the student who is late but also to the entire class. Missing even a few minutes of instruction can make it harder for students to catch up and feel connected to the day’s learning. By ensuring your child arrives on time each morning, you are helping them develop strong habits that will benefit them throughout their education and beyond.
Thank you for your support in making punctuality a priority. We appreciate your partnership in helping our students succeed!
District Wide Purple Up! Day
An Announcement from Student Services
Student Services Update - Attendance & Short Term Independent Study
The Bonsall Unified School District prioritizes student attendance for good reason. When students are absent, they miss valuable learning experiences within the classroom, as well as opportunities to engage in programs and activities. We emphasize the importance of daily attendance because it not only contributes to student success but also helps establish a positive pattern that will benefit students throughout their lives.
However, we recognize that there are occasions when students may need to miss school due to illness or unexpected family circumstances. Additionally, we understand that there may be pre-planned family events, significant religious observances, or important cultural activities that may necessitate a student’s absence.
In such cases, if your schedule allows, and your student is well enough to complete assignments, we kindly ask that you contact the attendance line at your respective school to request a Short Term Independent Study (STIS) Master Agreement. This process involves completing a simple form, reviewing the terms, and signing the agreement. The agreement needs to be completed only once per year.
Once the agreement is finalized, and you state the dates of absence, your child will be provided with the necessary work to complete during their absence. This can be picked up at the school or made available electronically. Upon returning to school and submitting the completed assignments, the teacher will evaluate the work and confirm that the required tasks have been fulfilled. This process ensures that students can recover lost learning, allows the attendance clerk to re-code the absence from the student’s record, which helps maintain positive school attendance rates. Additionally, this process preserves financial resources that would otherwise be unrecoverable if there was no Short Term Independent Study Master Agreement in place.
Although our hope is that families would only need to use Short Term Independent Study on one or two occasions, there is an allowance for the schools to recover up to 15 days of absence for each student.
Thank you for your cooperation and for supporting your child's education.

Friendly Reminders
Please see below for some friendly reminders from our school staff.
- Please remember when you check out your student, kindly wait outside of the office until your student arrives. Often times, multiple students are being checked out at once and things can get hectic for our front office staff when there are too many people in the office. This is also a measure we take to protect student's personal information. We often have meetings taking place in our office conference rooms and the office conversations can be disruptive to these meetings. We appreciate your cooperation with this.
- You must have a CLEARED volunteer packet in order to work in your student's classroom. This includes a background check and a cleared TB test. You will need to be finger printed if you plan on attending a field trip off campus. If you have questions about volunteering, please call the front office.
- When you are volunteering, siblings are not permitted in the classrooms. This can be a distraction to other students' learning.
- If you plan on taking a vacation during the school year, please allow your child's teacher a 10 day notice to prepare work and get a study contract together.
Thank you for paying attention to these reminders and requests. Should you have any questions, please call the front office.
