Counselor & SW Staff Corner
Month of October
This Months Trait: Responsibility
The Character Strong tier 1 curriculum is great to use in morning meetings or as a once a week SEL lesson. If you would like me to help walk you through the website I would be happy too. The best part is that there is no work to be done...IT'S ALL THERE! I do use some CS lessons in my curriculum, but there are so many amazing ones I have to leave out. Please see the second PDF for "Off-limit" lessons so we are not double teaching.
If you were to choose even just 1 Character Strong responsibility lesson for the month the below is my top recommendation:
K: Week 2: Students will practice Responsibility using their Strong Listening skills to follow directions in a drawing activity.
1: Week 2 & 3 are lessons about how to responsibly manage distractions within the classroom.
2: I would pull from first grade and do the distraction lessons!
3: Week 1: Students will identify a variety of ways in which they can show Responsibility in specific
situations.
4: Week 1 & week 3 are lessons about organizing!
5: I would use the 4th grade organizing lessons if it is a needed skill, otherwise your responsibility lessons are about goal setting.

Classroom Lessons
I just wrapped up K-2 lessons for self-awareness. The rest of the month is dedicated to wrapping up self-awareness (emotion management) in 3-5. We will then move on to social awareness in all classes in November which incudes bullying and respecting differences such as race and families.
September Big 5 Data
Each month the PBIS BSIP team looks at our school-wide behavior data and determines a plan for the tier 1 level. Here is what we did last month:
Average number of office discipline referrals: 3
Most frequent behavior: physical aggression
Where are most problem behaviors occurring: classroom
Who are the most frequently engaged in problem behavior: 2nd grade
The team then picks one area to focus on. We focused on 2nd grade and came up with a prevention plan for the second grade team to use at the tier 1 level. So far we have been able to reduce physical aggression referrals :)
Do you need help with a Tier 1 problem?
Is your class struggling with a specific skill that is not directly covered in my lessons? Have you tried strategies/incentives etc., and nothing seems to be working? Drama, rumors, hands to self, etc., I can help you! I can help you plan a lesson or find resources or we can co-teach a lesson together. Let me know if I can be of any assistance!
Tier 2 Interventions
Thank you so much for assisting in all our data collection these last 6 weeks in order to identify some students for tier 2 interventions.
We identified 51 students in need of a new tier 2 intervention.
Groups will begin 10/14. They will last 8 weeks with one week to spare for make-ups before Christmas break. If you have a student in a group, you will receive communication on skills we are working on so you can also enforce within the classroom setting.
All tier 2 interventions are tracked in Panorama and are visible on your end.
If there is a student in your class who is not in a tier 2 intervention and you are having behavior/SEL concerns, please bring them to care team.
Conferences
If you would like behavior data for a specific student to show at conferences please let me know and I will print all that I have for that student!
Operation School Bell
Most of you have received more envelopes to send home last week. They are for the free clothing resource field trip we do each year. We were assigned 39 spots this year!
1st-2nd grade will attend October 28th
KG, 3rd-5th will attend October 31st
We will leave pretty quickly after the day starts, our bus will be here around 9:30 to get loaded and make our way to our 10:15 appointment. We will return no later than 1pm. Sack lunches will be provided for them to eat on the field trip. Be on the lookout for the forms to be returned. I have asked parents to have them sent back no later than October 11th so I can reach out to other families if they are not interested. Once I have a for sure list of students that will be going, I will let classroom teachers know. Thanks for your help with this!
Assembly- Recognition of Soaring Hawks
There were a few mishaps at the assembly of student's names missing in the slides. The Assembly Team uses this spreadsheet to copy over names. I do my absolute best to update it each Friday, however the more eyes the better! Please be sure to double check the spreadsheet and the slides each month!
Classroom Minor Tracking
If you have been tracking classroom minors on the paper version please remember to turn those in so we can collect data and begin discussions. Please note CARE team meets on Wednesday's. If you are choosing to track digitally the link is below. If you have created your own google sheet please make sure you've shared it with me.
