Digital Citizenship Tips
Roncalli Kids Online
In today’s society, it's more important than ever that students become good digital citizens. We’d like to use our Roncalli Family Newsletter to begin sharing tips that will help our students and their families navigate the online world. It’s important that if a student is online, they are aware of the dangers that may come with using electronic devices (along with the many benefits as well). We’d like to start with a common, but important issue.
Sending messages: What to Send, and Who to Send it to
Often, online conflicts outside of school end up being brought into the classroom. One of the most common causes of conflict we deal with is the sending/sharing of messages. Students will often tell us that they are a part of a group chat with other students, and that it leads to big arguments and hurt feelings. For example, students (in a group chat or individual text) may send rude, hurtful or inappropriate things about another person. We are frequently seeing that students are taking screenshots of these conversations, and are sending/sharing them with the people who are being insulted. Sometimes, it even results in students not wanting to come to school - both the person who said the mean things and the person they were insulting.
It’s important to teach your child that ANY message they send to someone may potentially be shared with many other people, including people they would not want to see the message. This is happening quite often, with harmful results.
Let’s have those conversations with our kids, and continue to help them understand this sometimes confusing digital world we now live in. It is also very important that us adults model our expectations at all times.

Guidance Corner
Our amazing school counselor, Mr. David Lynch has a very informative and user friendly Virtual Guidance Room, that is full of resources and links that are available for students, parents/guardians and families to use. Feel free to visit his guidance room to have a look!
School Development Surveys
School Development Surveys are conducted annually to gather feedback from students, staff, and parents/guardians to inform the school development process. The survey results will be provided to your child’s school and used with other data to identify the school’s strengths and challenges. Your child’s school will then create and implement a plan to build on successes and address areas of challenge.
The survey is anonymous, which means that we cannot connect your survey responses to you. We encourage everyone to participate so that we have the most accurate representation of family perceptions at your school.
The Family Survey will be available from February 24th - April 4th, 2025. Please complete the survey by clicking on the following link: https://ca.research.net/r/SDFamily2425EN. If you do not have internet access contact your school.
If you have any questions or concerns regarding the school development surveys, please contact:
Allan Johnson at 709-729-7831 or allanjohnson@gov.nl.ca or
Patricia Emberley at 709-729-6850 or patriciaemberley@gov.nl.ca
Thank you for your participation and for being a valued member of our school community.
Term Two Report Cards
Term Two Report Cards will go home via students on Friday, March 21st. Family/Teacher Conferences will take place on Thursday, March 27 from 1:00 - 6:00 p.m. We will use the online program, OPTIS, again this year for booking appointments to meet your child’s teacher(s). Here is the link to the OPTIS website and all the instructions you will need. OPTIS will open for bookings on Thursday, March 20th at 10:00 a.m. and will close on Wednesday, March 26th at 10:00 a.m. Interview slots will be a 10 minute session. If you feel you need more time to meet with your child’s teacher, please reach out to the teacher and schedule an alternate time. Note that students will be dismissed at 11:30 a.m. on Thursday, March 27th to accommodate the conferences.
Forgotten Items and Phone Calls Home
A reminder that students are not permitted to call home for forgotten items (i.e., instruments, water bottles, etc. during the day, unless absolutely necessary) We are trying to encourage independence and responsibility in our students. If it is necessary, we at the office will call for them to reduce the amount of instructional time interrupted.
Lost and Found
We have a large number of items in our lost and found. If your child has lost or misplaced something, please encourage them to come have a look in our Lost and Found. Parents/Guardians are also welcome to come have a look.
Wonderful Days At Roncalli!
Have A Wonderful Weekend Everyone!
