Board recognizes "Because of an Educator" video contest winners
The Davis School District Board of Education proudly recognized five students from across the district who entered and received awards in the Utah PTA "Because of an educator" video contest.
"The goal was simple yet profound: to provide students with a platform to present a 90-second video to explain how a teacher has inspired them," said Utah PTA Representative Corey Fairholm.

Two business items approved by the board
Board approves learning materials for special education SEL curriculum.
The approved curriculum is Peekapak which is a USBE approved pilot program.
The board approved the sale of property located at 115 South 200 East in Farmington in the amount of $553,000.
Board Workshop
Board received quarterly report on district belonging efforts
Assistant Superintendent Dr. Fidel Montero presented the Belonging Quarterly Report to the board. The purpose of the report is to share the progress over the first two quarters of this school year, the direction over the next four months, the impact of HB261 and the goals of the Office of Equal Opportunity (OEO).
Dr. Montero started with some highlights of work that has been done since the last presentation:
- All principal and teacher/staff training on Effectiveness Assessment Report
- Presentation to Utah Legislation Rules Committee
- Belonging Council meetings with parents and members of the community
- Presentation to Governor's advisory board
OEO Director Darrin Nash shared a review of caseload trends from the cases that have been reported through the district's Harassment and Discrimination Reporting System (HDRS). Across the board the trendlines are going down for cases being reported with secondary schools having the most decline.
OEO Assistant Director Ben Hill discussed the focus on priority schools throughout this school year. All 17 junior high schools throughout the district have been identified as priority schools to focus on education and training to improve culture. The priority schools have gone through a rigorous process to work on improving belonging in our schools These processes include:
- Identifying a team of educators, counselors and administrators as the focus team.
- Providing rigorous training to focus on improving classroom behaviors.
- Tracking their discipline to monitor proportionality.
- Conducting a self-assessment to identify leading indicators that schools could focus on in order to improve and change the environment of schools and provide insight into school improvement plans and goals for each school.
Finally, Dr. Montero addressed the current understanding of the impact of HB261. Highlights of the impact of HB261 included:
- Allows the Local Education Agency (LEA) to comply with any necessary state or federal mandates. Our work in the OEO is in congruence with both federal and state law.
- Our school district does not have enrollment limits or pre-qualifications. Schools educate any child that walks through their doors and do not make acceptance judgement on the basis of any characteristic.
- The OEO exists to help foster school environments that are safe for all students. The office does not exist to serve one specific student population, or to promote a political ideology; but rather serves all children that attend our schools.
- The district goal is to get rid of any harassment or bullying that might show up in a school setting. This attitude and mission are in full agreement with the spirit of HB261 which aims to provide protections to all children.
Board received presentation from Community Schools Davis program
Director of Community Schools Robby Kinghorn shared an initial presentation about the work being done toward building Community Schools Programs throughout the district.
The mission of the Community School program is "Empowering our community through educational opportunities from cradle to career."
The vision of the program is "Access for all through equity and inclusion by creating a pathway to enhanced opportunities where one may achieve their full potential."
Board heard information related to English Language Arts K-6 adoption
Teaching and Learning Director Belinda Kuck and Humanities Section Director Julie Barlow presented information related to the proposed adoption the English Language Arts K-6 curriculum.
Kuck shared that the selection committee has concluded its review and has chosen Amplify CKLA (Core Knowledge Language Arts). The Teaching and Learning Department held the first open house on Feb. 15 with 98 participants attending throughout the night.
An additional open house will be held on Feb. 29. Public access to materials will be available in the Kendall Building from Feb. 15 - March 19. Digital access was emailed out for parents to access materials online if they choose.
Barlow presented some of the highlights of the reason for the selection of Amplify CKLA:
- Explicit foundational reading skills
- Integrated knowledge building curriculum
- A literacy curriculum with rich social studies and science knowledge aligned to literacy standards
- Authentic, diverse texts with student engagement
- Grade level reading
- Developmentally appropriate
- Writing skills integrated with reading skills
"Amplify CKLA is the healthy parts...of structured literacy," said Kuck. "Our ask would be that our teachers adopt with integrity and really teach the program as it is outlined for the first year and not change things."

Print materials will be available for review at the Kendell Building, located at 70 E 100 N, Farmington, Utah, from 7:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. daily. The login and password for the Amplify CKLA digital site will be shared with participants at the open houses.
