FAFSA EXTENSION - MAY 31ST
As you may know, The Tennessee Higher Education Commission (THEC) announced that the 2024-2025 Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) deadline for all eligible TN Promise students has been EXTENDED to May 31, 2024! You can find a copy of the press release attached to this email if you did not receive it.
We hope the deadline extension will provide your students and their families the necessary time to submit the FAFSA application and remain eligible for the TN Promise scholarship. While the deadline has been extended, it is extremely important that students make it a priority to complete the 2024-2025 FAFSA as soon as possible. We have notified students and their families of the deadline extension and we will continue to push targeted communication out to those who have yet to complete this crucial requirement.

SCHOLARSHIP AWARDS
ENGLISH DEPARTMENT SCHOLARSHIP
Congratulations to Dakota Forelle the 2023-2024 recipient of the $500 Oak Ridge High School English Department Scholarship
ORHS CLASS OF 1970 AWARDS THE HIGHEST NUMBER OF SCHOLARSHIPS EVER
1970 SCHOLARSHIP WINNERS
The ORHS Class of 1970 Scholarship Committee proudly announces our scholarship awardees for the 2023-2024 academic school year. Special thanks to Ron Edmond (pictured right) who organizes this endeavor and commits tons of hours to the process.
To a person, the Scholarship Committee was impressed by the diversity of students, their desire to continue their education, and the strength they exhibited in overcoming challenges to graduate from ORHS! We are extremely proud of them as well as the time, effort, and resources ORS invested in these students. With your staff's guidance and dedication, these students now have the self-confidence to not only dream about their goals and aspirations but to achieve them!
This year we awarded 13 students over $16,000 to attend either vocational school (TCAT), community college, or four-year institutions of higher education. This represents the largest number of scholarships and recipients over our 12-year history. Awardees will receive half of the scholarship for Fall 2024. If they exhibit success during Fall 0f 2024, they will potentially be awarded similar amounts for Spring 2025.
Congratulations to: Beau Boucher, Ta'Riq Frazier, Edson Gomez, Taylor Haun, Aviana Hodges, Calleigh Leighner, Joseph Lowery, Vashawn Nalls, Noah Price, Keileigh Richey, Nhu Quyhn Tran, Emily Salko and Connor Wilson.
SENIORS AWARDED THE SEAL OF BILITERACY
SEAL OF BILITERACY AWARD
Congratulations to the Class of 2024 recipients of the Volunteer State Seal of Biliteracy in French, German, Spanish, and Russian.
These students demonstrated proficiency in all four language domains (listening, speaking, reading, and writing) using a national language proficiency exam. In addition, they also proved to be on-track in English for their entire high school career.
The Seal of Biliteracy award programs builds upon strong research about the benefits of mastery of two or more languages for individual students, and the increasing awareness of the need in our communities, state, nation, and world for people with biliteracy and cross-cultural skills. It will benefit learners in the labor market and the global society while strengthening intergroup relationships and honoring the multiple cultures and languages in a community. The Seal of Biliteracy is a testament to the students’ love of languages and cultures and to their dedication to continued study of world languages.
This is truly an incredible honor, and the ORHS World Language Department is so proud of these students!

SUMMER SCHOOL CREDIT RECOVERY - SIGNUP
JUNE 3 - JUNE 28TH - AM/PM SESSIONS AVAILABLE
In order to stay on track for graduation and fill in learning gaps, students will need to complete summer credit recovery for courses that they have not passed this year (fall and spring semesters). Students have four years plus a summer to graduate from high school so it is important that they earn their credits each year to stay on track. We are excited to offer an expanded summer school this year to accommodate every student who may need to recover credit(s). Daily attendance is required for summer school. All students will be enrolled in the AM Session for their first course. They will be enrolled in the PM Session if they have an addtional course to complete. Students may stay for both sessions each day in order to complete their courses more quickly.
Summer Credit Recovery will be offered at NO COST this year, and we are excited to be able to offer transportation for our summer recovery students. If you sign up for the bus, please make sure to check the routes once they are posted. The bus stop for summer school may be different from the student’s regular school year bus stop.
Dates: Monday, June 3 through Friday, June 28
Times: 7:45 to 10:45 (AM Session)
11:15 to 2:00 (PM Session)
Click Here to Sign Up for Summer School 2024
Students must attend summer school in person. There is no work from home option for summer credit recovery. Summer school is self-paced, so they may finish before the final day. We will offer online credit recovery for our courses. Students may sign up for two courses for summer recovery but may seek admin approval to take a third course if necessary.
Students who are attending summer school will keep their laptops at the end of the school year.
Students must have earned a 50% or better in a course to be eligible for summer credit recovery. If a student has not earned a 50%, they must repeat the entire course the following school year.
If you have questions about your child’s eligibility for summer school, please reach out to his/her teachers, school counselors, or grade level administrators.
The deadline to sign up for summer school is May 29th.
TURNING 15 OVER THE SUMMER?
ARE YOU GOING TO HAVE A NEW DRIVER?
The Driving Center of Oak Ridge has openings for summer driver education classes. Register at Students who participate in the classes receive six driving sessions and will be given the opportunity to take the driving test with the instructors. Upon completion of the program, many families save up to $300 per year on car insurance so the class practically pays for itself in only one year. VOLLEY CATS🎾🎾🎾🎾
ORHS SEASON ENDS WITH TENNIS BANQUET
Last Thursday the ORHS Wildcat and Lady Wildcat tennis teams celebrated their accomplishments at First United Methodist Church in Oak Ridge. A total of seventy-three players, family, and friends enjoyed pizza provided by the ORHS Tennis Booster Club, watched a slideshow documenting the players' performance on the courts, and then cheered on the players receiving a variety of athletic and academic awards. Coach Joanne Bowman shared "David and I are very proud of the players' work in the classroom and on the courts. Twenty-five of our thirty-three players comprising both teams had a GPA of 3.5 or greater (on 4.0 scale) and received a TSSAA Student-Athlete Award of Merit." The Wildcats completed the District 4 spring season with a 3-6 record, while the Lady Wildcats finished strong at 5-4. The ORHS player advancing the farthest in the state tournament was Billy Bennett in the District 4 semi-finals for boys singles. Coach David Bowman stated "ORHS was lucky to have two good players and their families move to Oak Ridge this past school year. Billy is a sophomore and freshman Ben Mugnier were both in the starting lineup and that bodes well for the Wildcats next season. The Lady Wildcats had a new player too, junior Lily Shelton. She played ORHS volleyball in past years, but this spring she teamed with junior Sydney Blanchard to play #1 doubles. Lily, Sydney, plus sophomores Christian McGinnis and Ellie Nash will help Oak Ridge continue its winning ways in 2025. All four players will be taking lessons and playing on USTA teams this summer in the Knoxville League." The banquet culminated in six special awards being given to players who demonstrated exemplary sportsmanship, improved their won/loss record dramatically compared to last season, and finally the most valuable player on both teams. ORHS lost eleven seniors and they all will be sorely missed. Almost a third of the total players on both teams, several seniors were captains of their respective teams and provided invaluable leadership on and off the courts.
