TJS Code of Conduct
On Thursday, September 12, 2024, all students participated in an assembly led by Principal Ms. Garcia and School Counselor Mrs. Bletcher. We reviewed our school rules and code of conduct as well as bullying prevention training. Our Code of Conduct is detailed in our TJS Family Handbook which can be found on our school website and is also linked below for your convenience. Torey J. has been identified as a No Place for Hate School since 2017. We are hopeful that our students recognize the importance of school rules and understand their role and impact in our larger school community. We continue to expect all students to PAWS to THINK!
- Practice Kindness
- Act Safe and Responsible
- Work Hard
- Show Respect
We hope to catch our students using their PAWS each and every day! Please ask your child what they learned today regarding using their PAWS at TJS!
Start of the School Day Reminder
A reminder that school begins promptly at 8:30 AM each day. The doors will remain open for a five-minute drop off window from 8:30 - 8:35 AM. Morning announcements will begin promptly at 8:35 AM to maximize instructional minutes in our school day. Students dropped off after 8:35 AM will be marked tardy and will need to be signed in by an adult in the main office. Please ensure your child arrives to school on time each day.
Parent Drop-off and Pick-up Before, During, and After School Hours
A reminder that our BOE and TJS parking lot and parking spaces are for staff members only. Parents/guardians should not be parking in the TJS or BOE lots at any time BEFORE, DURING, or AFTER the school day. This includes when dropping off or picking up students at BASCC, PTO ASE classes, students being picked up early, parents dropping off items for a student during the school day. Parents/guardians are asked to please either park on other streets (Glenwild Road, Woodland Road) or walk to school. We thank you for your cooperation in this important matter as we are extremely limited on space and need to ensure that the areas are available to staff.
No Pets on School Property
While many of us love our furry friends, a reminder that pets are prohibited on school property, unless it is a certified therapy animal. Parents/guardians are asked to please leave furry friends at home during arrival and dismissal times.
Renaissance Star Assessments
Our first window of Star administration is occurring during the month of September. The Star assessments are diagnostic assessments designed to provide educators and parents with important information about a student's progress. Students in grades 1-5 take the Star reading and/or early literacy assessment as well as the Star mathematics assessment benchmarked for their specific grade. To read general information about the Star assessments, parents are encouraged to visit their family resources page.
Kindergarten teachers administer the Star CBMs (Curriculum Based Measures) in both reading and mathematics. The Fall kindergarten reading assessments assess a student's understanding of letters and their sounds, basic phonological awareness, and early decoding. The kindergarten math assessments include recognizing numerals and their value. Often times the CBMs may be administered in other grade levels, on an as-needed individual basis. For more information regarding the Star CBMs, please click here.
Back-to-School Night Information
This year's back-to-school night will be held on Tuesday, September 24, 2024, from 7:00 - 8:30 PM. The schedule is as follows:
- Welcome Presentations in the Jaguar Jungle (7:00 - 7:30 PM)
- Classroom Presentations Session 1 (7:35 - 8:00 PM)
- Classroom Presentations Session 2 (8:05 - 8:30 PM)
In an effort to accommodate families with multiple children, teachers will hold two twenty-five-minute sessions. Parents can attend either session 1 or session 2 as the information shared will be the same in both sessions. We kindly ask that children not attend this informative parent evening program. The Jaguar Jungle doors will open at 6:45 PM and parents/guardians are encouraged to visit the tables for various organizations that support our schools - PTO, MEF, MMA, SEPAG, Madison Public Library, and more.
The purpose of the evening is to visit the school to meet your child's teachers, see your child's classroom, secure information about the instructional program planned for your child for this school year, review policies and procedures, establish communication, and provide an opportunity to respond to general questions. Your child's learning experience is paramount, however, please be reminded that back-to-school night is not designed to discuss specific concerns regarding your child. We kindly ask that you contact your child's teacher or school counselor if you have specific concerns to discuss. Please note that classroom teachers will be scheduling individual parent-teacher conferences in November.
The TJS faculty and staff look forward to meeting you, partnering with you, and sharing in an exciting school year ahead!
