Raider Update
October 30, 2022
Message from the Superintendent
Good afternoon,
While I do not usually do this, activity at this past week’s School Board meeting and recent social media activity caused me to use this space to provide accurate information regarding a book challenge. First, there is a process for reviewing textbooks and materials, which is outlined in School Board policy 606.2 TEXTBOOKS AND INSTRUCTIONAL MATERIALS RECONSIDERATION OF TEXTBOOKS OR OTHER INSTRUCTIONAL MATERIALS. This policy was reviewed and most recently approved by the school board during the fall/winter of 2021. The process outlined in policy 606.2 states that a committee will convene, composed of district and building administration, teachers, a member of the Curriculum Advisory Committee, a parent, and a media specialist. The people on the committee must read the entire book—not just one page or one sentence. The questions that guide the committee’s discussion include looking at scholarly reviews and state standards. The committee members then report a finding and recommendation to the superintendent.
For the book Gender Queer, this process was followed during the summer of 2022, and the finding and recommendation were to keep the book on the shelf.
As for the book itself, the school district maintains one copy of the book for circulation, which is only available from the high school library. The book is not taught in classes, nor is it available at the other buildings in the district.
I am aware and understand that people have different views on this book and that some would like to see an appeal process added to the policy, which the School Board is considering for the Policy Committee to discuss.
Bob McDowell, Ed.D.
Superintendent

Child Tax Credit
Families with no income or low income could get at least $3,000 per child with the Child Tax Credit, plus $1,400 with the third stimulus payment - even if they have never filed taxes before and if they have not filed taxes this year. It is estimated that more than 33,000 children in Minnesota could miss out on this money if their parent/guardian has not filed.
There is an easy form for people to file on their mobile devices in 15 minutes or less at: getctc.org. The deadline is November 15.
