HMS News
HMS Ambassador Club
The HMS Ambassador Club, along with the One Book One School Committee, will be sponsoring a Wear Blue Day to Stand Up Against Hate on Friday, January 26. Students are encouraged to wear blue and bring in a donation for the Foundation to Combat Anti Semitism. January 26 is the day before Holocaust Remembrance Day, and this foundation, which is run by Robert Kraft, is an organization we worked with earlier this year during our One Book One School day. This day will help continue our goal of creating a school environment that stands up against hate.
Sew What?
Students in Grades 6 and 7 Family and Consumer Sciences classes have been working diligently on their sewing projects this term. They have been learning about sewing safety, sewing tools and equipment, understanding patterns, cutting and pinning, threading needles and knotting. They have successfully synthesized and applied their skills and knowledge by creating beautiful hand-sewn stuffed monkeys in sixth grade and machine-crafted pillowcases in seventh grade.
Sewing is immensely rewarding but it can also be challenging, as it requires fine motor and abstract reasoning skills, delayed gratification, sustained attention, and the ability to closely follow step-by-step directions. These students have put in the time and effort and their projects are beautiful!
STEM in Action
Students in 7/8th STEM kick started their next unit Engineering a Pandemic Response by simulating the containment of a virus represented by U.V. glow powder. In the end, the students learned how difficult it was to contain germs. EVERYONE was asking to wash their hands!
The HMS Ski Club enjoyed a day at Pats Peak on
Saturday, January 6th. More than 140 students had a great day on the slopes.

Attendance Reminder
Consistent school attendance is very important for all students. We know that this is a challenging time of year. If your child is absent from school, they should check their teachers' Google Classrooms and then reach out to the teachers to find out when they are available to help students complete any assessments or in-class assignments. If you know your child will be out, please prompt them to reach out to their teachers ahead of time.
We ask that families please avoid absences for reasons other than illness if at all possible.
