Greenbriar Gazette 9/20/24
Volume 34 Issue 5 | September 20, 2024
Principal's Message
Dear Greenbriar Families,
We had a fun week with our first Greyhound Pack meetings yesterday. Our returning 4th and 5th graders had fun picking up our kindergarteners, 1st graders and new students to gather for our first meetings. Packs got to meet one another, chat about their summers, practice their special pack signals, and build a collaborative Pack puzzle. Students are already asking when our next meeting will take place!
Next week we will wrap up NWEA MAP testing in 2nd through 5th grades and we'll have a chance to celebrate students who read our summer book club book, DOGTOWN with a special lunch party on Friday. Please be sure you've sent an RSVP for your child to Mrs. Sanchez--details below.
We're already looking ahead to Halloween and our Winter Festival of the Arts. Details about both special days are included below. We're looking for student volunteers to submit memories for the Winter Festival--check out the note from Mr. Bartunek on how to submit.
I hope you all have a great weekend. Cooler temps are in the forecast and I know our Greyhound will be happy to enjoy lots of time outside as the fall weather starts to arrive.
Warmly,
Ginny
Students enjoyed our first Pack meetings of the year. Our older students walked younger students to and from their meetings and Packs practiced their special Pack signals for greeting each other in the hallways!
News & Notes
Erin's Law Presentations
Erin’s Law, House Bill 6193, signed into law in 2013, requires schools to implement an age-appropriate sexual assault and abuse awareness and prevention curriculum for grades pre-K through 12. We are pleased to share that Childhood Victories will be returning to District 28 to assist our schools with the curriculum entitled Be Seen and Heard©, a prevention-oriented child sexual abuse program.
Greenbriar students will attend presentations on Friday, October 11th. Please view this letter for details.
The presentations are developmentally appropriate, interactive, and aligned with the learning standards associated with the law. The focus of the presentations is to teach students basic skills to keep them safe from dangerous or abusive situations. The concepts that will be discussed include the following:
- Distinguishing safe from unsafe touches
- Safety rules at home and school
- Saying "NO"
- Safe/Unsafe Secrets
- It’s not the child’s fault if someone touches him or her
- Telling a trusted adult

- If children arrive after 8:30, a caregiver must bring them into the office and sign them in.
- Each visitor needs to communicate with the office staff before being given entry to the building, so please do not hold doors for others trying to enter the building.

'Anxious Generation' Community Conversation
WHAT: Community Conversation and Call to Action
WHEN: 7 p.m.Monday, Sept. 30
WHERE: THIS EVENT HAS MOVED TO GLENBROOK NORTH AUDITORIUM
Join us as CATCH leads a Community Conversation and Call to Action about our kids' mental health! There is lots of buzz about Jonathan Haidt's book, "The Anxious Generation," which brings the youth mental health crisis to the forefront. Haidt talks about smartphones, social media, and over-parenting, and he outlines very reasonable steps that we can take to create real change for our kids. We will talk, share our concerns, and discuss actionable next steps to reverse this youth mental health crisis. None of us can do this alone, but we CAN do this together.
