BOARD OF EDUCATION MEETING: NOVEMBER 19, 2024
Update from the Board President
Board President Jayma Bammerlin recognized the district’s recent success, highlighting the
4.5-star rating received from the Ohio Department of Education—a significant accomplishment reflecting the dedication of staff, students, and administration. The Board voted on the goals established for both the superintendent and the treasurer. These goals focus on:
Superintendent: Development of a Strategic Plan, enhancing student achievement, fostering a positive community and staff culture, and improving overall communication.
Treasurer: Strengthening capital planning, promoting fiscal stewardship, and maintaining transparent communication.
Update from the Superintendent
Mr. Sean Smith, Middle School Principal, and Mrs. Rebecca Brechbill, Elementary Assistant Principal, provided an overview of the district’s impressive 4.5-star rating on the Ohio State Report Card. Highlights include:
The Performance Index improved from 86.3 to 87.4, exceeding pre-pandemic levels and similar districts.
A 5-star graduation rate for the 5-year cohort, reflecting steady progress.
Significant gains in early literacy, rising from 32.1% to 51.8%.
A 5-star Gap Closing score, bolstered by reduced chronic absenteeism (19.9% to 14.5%) and meeting key progress targets in math for all student groups.
Dr. Michael also praised the Senior Class Officers for their thoughtful presentation advocating for changes to the graduation schedule and location. Following the board’s approval, graduation will now take place at Northridge High School’s new stadium. The new dates are:
2024-2025: Friday, May 23, 2025 (previously Sunday, May 26, 2025)
2025-2026: Friday, May 22, 2026 (previously Sunday, May 25, 2026)
Treasurer Update
Treasurer Britt Lewis presented the district’s Five-Year Forecast. Key insights include:
Revenues are projected to grow by 1.8% annually, with expenditures increasing at a rate of 7%—highlighting the need for careful fiscal oversight.
Deficit spending is anticipated to begin in FY26, emphasizing the importance of long-term planning to maintain financial stability.
The emergency levy renewal in May 2023 was critical to maintaining the district’s fiscal health.
Donations
The Board expressed gratitude for the donations made by organizations, companies, and individuals in support of the schools.
American Heart Association: $900 for CPR Kits for the High School CPR/AED Training Program.
Athletic Booster Club Football Account: $1,600 for transportation costs for the first round of OHSAA Ohio High School football playoff games.
Licking County Foundation - Tibbie Leslie Travel Grant: $3,000 for educator Nikki Ruiz.
PTO Contributions: Admission fees for field trips & new playground equipment
Board Business
The Board approved the revised graduation dates and location for the 2024-2025 and 2025-2026 school years. Updated calendars are attached.
The Board voted to award the Superintendent and Treasurer an annual performance incentive as outlined in their contracts in recognition of meeting their 23-24 school year goals.
The Board adopted the goals set for the Superintendent and Treasurer, supporting a focus on strategic priorities.
The Board approved an addendum to the Treasurer’s contract to increase his annual cola, tax-sheltered annuity, and vacation days.
