Beginning this month, BUUSD will be running a social media campaign that we are calling #iamBarre.

What is #iamBarre?

A group of BUUSD parents started #iamBarre in the winter of 2020, using the hashtag to make a unified effort to change the narrative in Barre around education and to emphasize the need to invest in our future, the children of Barre.

How can I participate in this movement?

On your social media platform of choice, make a public post describing your student, their interests, their favorite part about school, along with a photo or video. Make sure to use the hashtag #iamBarre so your post will sit alongside those from the larger school community.

We will be sharing some of our favorites on social media and we encourage you to share your favorites as well!

For the months of March & April, students and School Counselors were buzzing; planning and replanning for next year.

They spent time virtually and/or in person going over graduation requirements, course offerings, and planning for an ever changing world.

In particular, students quickly realized that Spaulding High School strives to prepare them for success by providing a wide range of learning opportunities for them to engage in rigorous and meaningful coursework, learning experiences to enhance their interests and skills, and flexible opportunities to access their education, especially with the passing of Act 77.

Act 77 charged Vermont secondary school educators to create personalized learning environments that offer flexible pathways to graduation and a planning process by which students and educators can reflect upon. For Spaulding High School, we are very excited about our students having access to Dual Enrollment and increased offerings of Concurrent College courses on our very own campus (see graphic below that outlines the various pathways offered).

For incoming Juniors and Seniors, this can be very exciting and overwhelming too as they begin to plan for their future whether it be enrolling in a Community College of Vermont course, applying to Early College, entering a Career Technical Education program, exploring programs at various colleges/universities, applying to a workforce development program, or preparing for the military.

For our incoming Sophomores, their Freshman year has been incredibly interesting and their sense of community has been quite different with COVID impacting all aspects of programming, so members of the Freshman Class, we salute you!

In response to the aforementioned, click on this link for additional resources created by our Aspirations Coordinator from Vermont Student Assistance Corporation (VSAC), Lauren Hood. These resources will help you navigate those waters whether you are a Freshman, Sophomore, or Junior.

In regards to our graduating Seniors, if you still need additional assistance with post secondary planning, seek out your School Counselor or Chelsea Martin, our VSAC Talent Search Counselor with whom many have met from last Spring and/or this year virtually. She is present on campus now, so feel free to contact her for help at martinc@vsac.org and set up a time to meet.

Mr. Ferland is no stranger to Spaulding High School's community since his return in 2016.

In the late 1990s, he helped run the Advance Program with former director Chris Hennessey, now co-principal at Barre City Elementary & Middle School and then to Harwood Union High School for 16 years as a faculty member with their highly regarded Alternative Program.

However, his work within the walls of Spaulding is all about building relationships.

In 2018, he launched Captain's Commendations where individuals can recognize students, faculty/staff, and athletes for their good work and clearly this concept continues to grow in numbers.

Like Joe Bisson, Class of 2006, original founder of the Crimson Crazies, Mr. Ferland wanted to reboot the spirit of TIDE PRIDE and acknowledge the good work of others whether it be recognizing an individual's day to day contributions, persevering, overcoming obstacles, and/or just taking the time to do a simple deed.

"I want Spaulding to be the type of place where everyone can feel heard and have a seat at the table. A true community is one that is inclusive and is supportive of one another. With these weekly awards, I wanted it to be something anyone in our school could be nominated for and be recognized for, as all people are capable of doing great things. As a school, that's something we want to foster and promote at all costs."

In particular, Mrs. Carpenter noted "it's nice to hear from a colleague or student that you are making a difference."

Clearly by the numbers, people are making a difference and continue to do so each year.

In the words of AD Soffen this year's Winter Season was "very different from the Fall

in many unique ways, from the way the players would say good game, streaming the home games, and more."

Like many Vermont families, Tide families awaited patiently like watching a sudden death match go over time; asking the question "will my Senior be able to play his or her last season?" As for our Winter athletes, they persevered and realized that Winter sports would exist, but it would not look the same...

According to Josie Diego, Class of 2021, she was just happy to be able to play with her teammates and keep the streak going, especially under the leadership of Coach MacAuley and Coach Abbiati. She credits their knowledge, tactical abilities, and having faith in her teammates are factors that contributed to their successful season, along with their hunger to do better.

Like Girls Basketball, Boys Basketball and Hockey teams were eager to step onto the court or ice with their teammates and learned how to work as a team again. They too were hungry to play.

For the some, the silence was unbearable when they first stepped onto the ice at the BOR or court with no fans or family.

Jameson Solomon, Class of 2022, missed the sounds of his peers in the stands, but he was just hungry to play. He knows in his heart, the fans will be back and this was an "unprecedented season."

Whereas, Zach Stabell, Class of 2021 aspired to be an effective leader, especially for his basketball teammates. He acknowledged that COVID deflated the game a bit and after last Spring, he recognized the thrill of playing isn't the same. But noted fondly, Coach Willard's dreaded 16s remained the same and provided structure during practice.

For wrestling standout, Ryan Glassford, Class of 2022, he was incredibly disappointed, especially for Seniors who did not have a Winter Sports season. He knows too well what it means to work hard and see a team advance on. For Ryan, he was looking forward to earning more wins and going to states, but he is keenly aware of the risks associated with wrestling, especially with it being a highly contact sport.

But as true Tide athletes, their hunger and love for the game kept them going. This was evident for Varsity Boys & Girls Basketball teams who experienced their own version of March madness during playoffs, along with Girls Hockey who made history with an incredible undefeated season.
