Introducing Vice Principal Mr. Ryan Duckworth
I am looking forward to joining J.C. Charyk School this coming year as a Vice Principal. This year will be my 19th year as a teacher and 12th as an administrator. Over the past 11 years, I was a principal of Berry Creek Community School in Cessford. More recently, I was the principal of Delia School for the past 6 years. For Delia, I was fortunate to be a part of the planning and construction of the new Delia School which was a career highlight.
My family and I live in Delia. My children, Brett (Grade 10) and Claire (Grade 7), attend Delia School. My wife, Tanya, is the secretary for Delia School. We have lived in Delia for 6 years as well. We have two puppies who are both "Doodles." Honey is a Golden Doodle, and Izzy is a Mini Aussie Sheepadoodle. In my spare time, I enjoy riding my Harley Davidson Street Glide to clear my head.
I consider myself a farm boy where I grew up on a large Dairy Farm near Lacombe, and later a small Sheep and Cattle Farm near Hays, Alberta. I learned early about the value of hard work, where I worked with machinery and animals from an early age. I then attended Augustana University College and earned a Bachelor of Arts Degree in Physical Education and History. From there, I was off to the University of Calgary in the Faculty of Education for two years. For the next 4 years, I worked for the City of Calgary and then in the oil industry as an Owner Operator of an Oilfield Boiler Service, and a Safety Supervisor of an oilfield safety company. I was fortunate to start my teaching career south of Brooks in Rainier at Alcoma School, and Duchess School. Early in my career I saw the important work my principal was doing and was inspired to take a Masters Degree in Educational Leadership from the University of Lethbridge. After that, I was prepared in my 8th year to take on a role as a principal for Berry Creek Community School and Delia School.
This year, I will be teaching Social 7, Science 7 and Industrial Arts for Junior High students. I will also be working closely with our staff to expand the Leader in Me Programming throughout the school. I hope to provide families with resources to help families learn and utilize the 7 Habits of Highly Effective People, by Stephen Covey, as well.
I look forward to serving the Town of Hanna and the surrounding area. If you would like to get a hold of me, please contact me @ (403) 854-3642 ext.# 6143 or by email @ ryan.duckworth@plrd.ab.ca.
Take care,
Mr. Duckworth

Introducing Sunny
As most of the JCC Community knows, we used to have a School Support Dog named Maggie, who lived with Mrs. Olsen. Last year, Mrs. Olsen and her family moved away from Hanna and Maggie went with them. I'm excited to introduce our next generation School Support Dog, Sunny! Sunny is a Goldendoodle like Maggie and they even have the same dad. He is currently 3 and a half months old, and we're learning a bunch of things to be able to be in the school for short periods of time right now. Sunny absolutely loves both kids and adults and is fairly calm for a puppy. If you'd like to keep up with what Sunny is learning, please follow J.C. Charyk School Support Dog on Facebook! - Miss Palmer (Project REACH) and Sunny.

Parent Parking - Student Drop Off/Pick Up Zones
To ensure that students are dropped off and picked up in a safe manner, please see the map below to show appropriate drop off locations for students. We ask that if you are using a parking lot, please park appropriately and walk your child to the doors to ensure they get into the building safely. There is a dedicated drop off zone on the north side of 7th Avenue West. We are asking you not to park on the south side of 7th Avenue West as it impedes traffic flow on that street. If you are parking / dropping off in the bus loop (between 9:00 am - 2:30 pm or after 3:30 pm), ensure you are only parking on the sidewalk side of the loop.
School Supply Lists
You can purchase school supply kits (ECS - Grade 9) for the 2024-2025 school year directly from School Start (www.schoolstart.ca), or you may utilize the supply lists to purchase your supplies locally https://jcc.plrd.ab.ca/parents/supply-lists. The lists have a Starter Package (base package) as well as Additional Items Required. The additional items are required by each teacher; they include items such as pencil cases, sharpeners, and calculators. These products do not need to be purchased on a year-to-year basis if you already have them. Orders placed with School Start will be delivered directly to you.
