March 2017
Many thanks to the Furhman Family!
On March 1st, the Furhman family generously donated 7 fertilized eggs (from Benner's Farm) and an incubator. The children spent 21 days observing the incubator and learning about the Life Cycle of a Chick. During the 21 days of waiting, the children protected the eggs just like mother hens. Every day, we talked about what was developing inside the eggs. On the 21st day, the children arrived to school and saw that 5 chicks had hatched out early that morning! They could hardly believe their eyes! We moved the 5 chicks into a large container and waited for the other 2 chicks to be born! The children were fortunate to have watched one of these baby chicks hatching! On the 22nd day, the 7th chick was born. We were all very excited but unfortunately, after 72 hours or so later, it had passed away. It was difficult to accept but we did our best to explain to the children that it had most likely been sick. I am sure you heard a lot about the chicks! We were fortunate to have kept them in the classroom for 8 days. The children spent a lot of time observing the growing chicks. By day 8, they could clearly see that the chicks were too big for the container as their feathers were growing and that they were trying to fly out! The Furhmans graciously brought the chicks to their home: Benner's Farm.
While waiting for me one afternoon, the kindergarteners decide to trace a picture of a hen, using the light box and then color it in. It was very sweet! Many of your children were inspired by the chicks and lots of artwork about the life cycle of a chick was produced during the month of March.
Instrument Petting Zoo
On Friday morning we had the pleasure of attending an Instrument Petting Zoo in the gym. The Staller Center’s Instrument Petting Zoo introduced the children to a variety of instruments through an interactive 45 minute program, presented by students of Stony Brook University’s music department and Staller Center faculty.
The presentation of instruments was so dynamic and interactive. The children were introduced to String Instruments, Wind Instruments and the Brass Family. The staff was full of life and quite humorous! The children were thoroughly entertained.
After the opening introduction, your children were invited to touch and 'play' several instruments.
A Theremin; children were stunned by this instrument..!
