Science
Hello Scientist,
This week, students were busy investigating the origins of our universe by organizing its timeline of events from the Big Bang to current time as well as understanding the spatial properties of celestial bodies such as how big the moon is compared to an artificial satellite like the Hubble telescope. Students also completed their Distance vs Dimness lab which gave them further understanding as to the importance of studying stars. Finally, students explored the life cycle of a star and how matter cycles through our universe.
Next week, students will explore constellations and why we view stars differently depending on which hemisphere we live in. They will have a fun opportunity to “discover” a new constellation by participating in a narrative writing exercise describing their constellation. Also, students will be taking their middle of year MAP testing.
As a reminder, we will not have new Root words until the end of January.
World Geography
Last Week students continued their map quiz preparation and review through jeopardy review game. After they took the quiz, at the end of the week, students will launch into the theme for their unit on barriers to education, learning the four major barriers or physical geography, poverty, conflict, and labor.
This Week students will begin their case studies of students experiencing the barriers to education in their own schooling. They will fill in their organizer daily. At the end of the week we will look at how to analyze data that shows barriers to school, with a formative exit ticket to conclude the week.
English Language & Arts (ELA)
MAP MOY testing was this past week (1/13-1/16). As the teachers and administrators continue to collaborate on how to process the RIT score that is given, I want students to focus on the Lexile range they receive. Students have a paper (that should remain in class until further notice) that collects the data for their beginning and middle of year Lexile range and RIT score. The most important component of the Lexile range is that it provides students with a guideline for novels they should read. For example, if your student has a Lexile range of 1100-1210, they should find novels within that range. If they want something more challenging, they should aim for the higher end of the range. I have also provided students with a website that allows them to search for books by Lexile range. I encourage parents to talk with their students about their scores and what novels they are interested in. A quick google search can identify the Lexile score a novel is set at. Their data will be posted in the comment section of the assignment on Canvas titled, “Middle of Year MAP Assessment”. Their beginning of year data is shared there now, I just have to wait for the data to populate with the MOY scores within the next week.
More information on this is forthcoming.
This week’s schedule:
