What a Year! That’s what everyone is saying. But...this has been an excellent year. We have been fortunate to be in-person for the majority of the school year. Many students statewide are just getting back into school and nationally, many students are still not back in school. With cooperation from students, staff, and families, Battle Lake has once again shown how it can be a leader in the education world. Our plan, the execution of that plan, and the flexibility that has been allowed has proven effective and our students have benefited as a result.
The district is in the initial steps of developing a new strategic plan which will guide our district over the next several years. As part of the process, we will be gathering input from the community, the staff, and the students and that input will drive the development of the new plan. This is a great opportunity for us to celebrate what we do well but also focus on the areas we can continue to improve on.
Student voice is very important to me. As such, I have started what I am calling the "Superintendent Student Advisory Council". Two students from each grade 9-12 (21-22 school year) will be selected to serve on this council Once selected, the students will serve the remaining years they have before graduation. This advisory council will advise the Superintendent on school matters from the perspective and opinion of students. This will be a great opportunity not only for the students, but for me as well.
The excitement certainly picks up in the spring. With the nice weather comes an upbeat atmosphere in the building while we creep closer to important events such as prom, spring sports and, of course, graduation. While things still have not returned to what we know as normal, signs of getting back to some level of normal are here and that will be good for everyone. These important events serve as lifetime memories for our students and their families and we are committed to creating the best experience we can within the guidelines given us.
I cannot end this article without extending a heartfelt thank you to our community. Battle Lake residents have been supportive of our school, our staff, and our students all year long. I have heard many times that a strong school makes a strong community. While this is true, it is also a strong and supportive community that makes its school strong. Together we make Battle Lake strong and a great place to live, work, and learn. Thank you for all the support you have shown; it is certainly appreciated.
We are busy planning for next year, but remain focused on closing out 2020-2021 strong.
Yours in Education,
Darren Kern
Superintendent/PK-6 Principal
