The Principal's Corner
Dear Tuscumbia School Community,
I can’t believe it, but we are officially in the last quarter of school. When we come back on Tuesday, we will only have 40 school days left – how crazy is that? This year has really flown by, and I have no doubt the rest of the year will go just as fast. This is the time of year when students can start to slack off on completing assignments for their classes. Teachers should be staying in contact with you about what is going on in their classrooms, but if you ever have a question about what your student should be working on, please don’t hesitate to reach out to your student’s teacher. We want students to finish the school year strong and know that with your help, they can do just that.
Thank you to everyone that came out for parent/teacher conferences. I will be sending out a survey in the next week asking for your feedback on having the one-link sign up. Your feedback is important and we want to hear from you. Be on the lookout for the survey.
I don’t know about you, but the sunshine and 70 degree temperatures we have had this week were just what I needed. I love a good snow / cold weather day, but I’m more than ready for the warmer weather to stick around for a while. My fingers are crossed that the rest of March and April bring us nice weather! With the increase in temperatures, students are starting to bring out their summer clothing. Parents, please make sure that if your student wears shorts or a skirt to school that they are school appropriate. If students are having to pull their shorts/skirt down to cover their bottom, it is too short to be worn at school. Please note that students will be asked to change if they arrive at school wearing clothing that is not school appropriate.
Here are some upcoming events to add to your calendar:
March 17: No School
March 20: Kindergarten Registration

Sincerely,
Dr. Kirtley

Information for Getting a CDL to Drive a Bus
The process for getting a CDL is not difficult, and we will help you! Here is what you need to do:
- Take the written portion of the exam. Here is the study guide. You can get a printed copy at any testing site. You will need to take the test for School Bus, Class B with passengers. You do NOT need to test for air brakes.
- After you pass all portions, take the paper the testing site gives you to the license office and get your permit. You also have to take 2 forms of proof-of-residency and a photo ID.
- Come see us--James Luttrell is our federally approved site trainer, and he will provide your training to take the pre-check and driving portions of the test. He will also take you to the testing site when you take the test. Before he does that, we will need you to complete an application and get a fingerprint background check to ensure you are eligible to work for the district.
- After you pass your test, you will take your paperwork to the license office again with 2 forms of proof-of-residency and a photo ID and get your CDL.
- Keep all of your receipts--we reimburse for the permit, CDL, and fingerprints, and we pay for the drug testing and physical.
- As soon as you have a CDL, are approved by the Board, have a DOT physical, and pass a pre-employment drug test, you can sub bus routes and/or drive activity trips.
Are you interested in becoming a substitute teacher?
If you are interested in becoming a substitute teacher and you do not have the required 36 college hours, you can do an online course that will allow you to get a substitute certificate. Here is the link to that course, and here is the link to the DESE web page that gives you more information about what you need to do to get a substitute certification. Our daily rate for subs for the 2024-25 school year will be $100/day!
