DCES Panther News
September 5, 2022
Dear Panther Families,
We had a wonderful first month of school. When I think of September, I automatically transition into the fall season. Pumpkins, and apple picking, the book fair, and Jog-a-thon! The fall is jam-packed full of fun. Please check out our calendar below for important school events.
Beginning this month, we will have character awards called Student of the Month. Each month, we are focusing on student behavior tied to one of our main school rule pillars or the Character Counts Traits. This month is Safety. As school rules are being taught, our staff are looking to nominate 1-2 students in each classroom for the Student of the Month Award. At the end of the month, we will invite those students and families to our Student of the Month Assembly. We are proud to be recognizing our students for their great behavior and character. If your child is nominated this month, you will receive an invitation to join us at our Student of the Month Assembly.
School Dress Code: The APS Board of Education has empowered each school to create and approve its own dress code. APS has a new dress code (click here) and each school is to change/edit/approve its own dress code. Please provide any feedback regarding APS's dress code in this google form. Your feedback will be reviewed with our Instructional Council (IC). Our IC will then discuss and create a dress code. Families will review and vote to approve the dress code based on feedback received from our community.
Have a great month!
Sincerely,
Jessica Chavez
Principal

Panther Patrol
The Panther Patrol is seeking males in our community to join the Panther Patrol!
We are looking for volunteers who can spend a day out of the month or school year to help keep our campus safe. During the day you would monitor the perimeter of the school, and connect with students in the cafe, at recess, or in your children's classrooms. Connect with other males in our school community
- Request an Unsupervised Background Check (Principal Chavez will send your information on to APS and they will be in touch with next steps.). Background checks are taking a little bit more time to process and complete. Sign up early to ensure you have your clearance and badge before your volunteer date.
- Sign up for a day at school! September sign ups are now open!
Volunteers who sign up in August will get 2 free tickets to a UNM Lobo Football game this fall!

Runner’s Club Starts September 15 after school!
Hello Families!
I am happy to announce that Runner’s Club will start on Thursday, September 15 after school until 2:50 pm.
Runners Club will meet on Tuesdays and Thursdays. The time will be from 2:05 to 2:50 PM. Runners will meet Ms. Johnna on the grass field after the 2:00 pm bell rings. We will stretch, run, and play a game before pick up at 2:50. Snack is OPTIONAL and must be brought from home. We will not have a designated snack time but I understand they may need something and will allow them to have something if they bring it from home.
Please fill out the attached permission slip and information sheet and have your child return it to the Health Office by Monday, September 12th.
If your child goes to REGC after school, I will check them into the program at 2:45 each day and everyone else will meet by the black gate closest to the map on the playground. (Front parking lot is the best place to park)
If you are available to help on any afternoon, I would greatly appreciate the extra eyes. You would need to have at least your basic background check with APS completed. I am looking forward to having your children join us. If you have any questions or concerns please feel free to contact me at: johnna.mente@aps.edu OR 505-234-3031. Text preferred or will call back as soon as possible.
Thank you!
Johnna Mente-Runners Club Sponsor
Please review these two documents and print and sign the permission slip directly below.
