Instructors include current and former National Coaches from Australia, New Zealand, England, Norway and Fiji.


All students from all styles are most welcome. Train in as many sessions as you like amongst open-minded karateka from age 5 to 50+.

Our fabulous summer course makes optimum use of the fabulous beaches of Wollongong and the facilities of the Wollongong Surf Leisure Resort (near Sydney, NSW, Australia)

Training Schedule

This is a pretty jam packed schedule! But that is to give you lots of options - you're not expected to do every session, but rather to choose that ones that you would like to attend. There will be more detail, showing the instructors and classes for each session, at the course.


FRIDAY 4 MARCH 2016

5.30 – 7.00pm Session for all participants


SATURDAY 5 MARCH 2016

7.30 – 8.30am Fun Run & Beach training (shorts / t-shirt)

9.15 – 10.15am Kids session and Weapons for adults

10.30am – 12.30pm Adults and senior kids session

1.15 – 2.15pm Kids session and Strength for adults

2.30 – 4.30pm Adults and senior kids session

4.45pm – Team kata competition

5.30pm - Golden League kumite


SUNDAY 6 MARCH 2016

7.30 – 8.45a.m Session for all participants

10.15 – 11.15am Kids blocker competition

10.15am – 12.15pm Adults and senior kids session

12.45 – 4.00pm Team kumite competition & presentation

Your course host and the founder of Ishinryu Karate in Australia. Current National Mentor Coach to the Fijian KF. Former National & Technical coach of Australia (5 times at WKF championships). APUKO dual gold medallist & 4 time representative at the WKF World Championships.

Wayne Otto OBE 5th Dan Uechi-Ryu

The incredible holder of NINE WKF World Titles. Former national coach of England, current national coach of Norway (and coach to a silver medal at the 2014 WKF Senior World Championships). This is Sensei Wayne's 14th visit to the Summer Course. Video highlights at the base of the flyer.

Arthur Moulas 9th Dan Uechi-Ryu

Chief instructor for Uechi-ryu karate and Matayoshi kobudo in Australia. Oceania kumite referee. Former president of the NSW Karate Federation.

Sensei Karl Ayliffe 7th Dan Uechi-Ryu

A former three time gold medalist at the All Okinawa World Championships, and master of yoga.

Jim Phillips 6th Dan Kyokushinkai

Former national Kyokushinkai champion, Australian representative at Kyokushinkai world championships. Has completed the 30 and 50 man kumite.

Phil Laing 6th Dan Ishinryu NZ

Chief Instructor Ishinryu NZ, New Zealand National coaching panel. Former World Championship kumite and kata competitor for NZ.

Former assistant National Coach for Australia. Oceania referee. Current international veterans competitor.

Current NSW state coaching panel. Kata, weapons and self defence specialist.

Weapons, kata, self and knife defence, tai chi. Shotokan referee.

Multiple Australian champion and international representative. Current fitness trainer.

Peter Sbirakos 3rd Dan Shobukai

Strength and conditioning training specialist. Current Sports Scientist for the Canberra Raiders. He'll be at the course if the Raiders aren't playing away!!

Competitions

Current sports insurance is required to participate in any of the competitions (instructor to sign course entry)



  • Fun run – 5 divisions, Saturday morning on the beach
  • Gladiator – big padded sticks for the little kids (up to age 10ish)!
  • Team kata – students assemble their own teams and nominate during the course, junior and senior divisions.
  • Golden League – Open Men’s and Women’s kumite (18 years and over), and also 16-17’s. Modified WKF rules (will be clarified at the course). Enter at the course.
  • Team kumite – organisers assemble the mixed teams -to enter the team kumite you must indicate your intention and submit your entry form before 21 February.

Family discount: First two students full price, third and subsequent students 25% off.

Accommodation

Stay at the wonderful Wollongong Surf Leisure Resort in a range of accommodation, from camping to 8 person cabins.


The summer course page of our website includes alternative nearby accommodation.


You can also travel to the course each day, if you live nearby you do not need to stay at the resort.
