November News, Events & Updates
Dear Awbrey Park Families,
First and foremost, I want to thank all of our Awbrey Park families for supporting our Jog-a-Thon this school year. I am excited to announce that we raised $15,374.63 for field trips and other exciting educational opportunities for our students. Thank you!
As a reminder, we have no school Monday through Friday next week due to conferences and Thanksgiving Break. If you have not had the opportunity to sign up for fall conferences, please be sure to connect with your child's teacher at your earliest convenience.
As always, please don’t hesitate to reach out to the school office if you have any questions or concerns. Have a great Monday!
Sincerely,
Jared Tiecke, Principal
Parent/Teacher Conferences
Parent/Teacher conferences are almost here! This is a great opportunity to see how your child is doing and meet with their teacher. Conferences are scheduled for Friday, November 22nd from 4:00-8:00pm and Monday, November 25th from 8:00-8:00pm.
There will be no school the week of conferences (November 25th-November 29th).
Conferences will be in person this year, but virtual options are also available upon request. Scheduling information was sent to families on Friday, November 8th via Parent Square. If you have not had the opportunity to sign up for fall conferences, please be sure to connect with your child's teacher on available times. Thank you!
Vision & Dental Screenings
Awbrey Park will be hosting our annual vision and dental screenings on Monday, December 5th & 6th from 9:00am-12:30pm. All K-5 students will participate in both the dental screening and vision screening.
The vision screening will be done by a “Spot Test” with the Lions Sight and Hearing Foundation volunteers and does NOT take the place of a thorough eye examination by an eye health specialist, as serious or eye health problems can be missed. If the results of the vision screening indicate your student needs a thorough eye exam, you will be notified of results after we receive them, generally 1-2 weeks after the screening date. If your student wears glasses or contacts, please have them bring those to school and wear them for the K-5 vision screening.
Our dental screening is also offered for all students. Students of parents and guardians who chose to return the Authorization for Dental hygiene Services form can receive a fluoride varnish treatment, which helps prevent cavities. These services are provided by the Community Health Centers of Lane County dental hygiene providers.
If you do not want your child to participate in the vision and/or dental screening, please contact our School Nurse, Suzie McCall at mccall_s@4j.lane.edu at least two days prior to the screening date to opt out. Thank you!
Pertussis (Whooping Cough) Reminders
I want to take a moment to thank you for your support and partnership in keeping our school community safe. We currently have active cases of pertussis, or whooping cough, reported in our community, including in some immunized students. I want to share some important information regarding the symptoms to look out for:
Mild Symptoms are similar to a cold:
- Runny or stuffy nose
- Low-grade fever
- Mild cough
Later Symptoms:
- Violent coughing fits
- A "whoop" sound when inhaling after or during coughing fits
- Vomiting after a coughing fit
- Difficulty breathing
Please remember that pertussis is highly contagious. An infected person can start spreading the illness as soon as they exhibit cold-like symptoms and can continue to do so for up to three weeks after coughing begins. If a person with whooping cough receives appropriate antibiotics, they will not be contagious after five full days of treatment. Therefore, we keep students home from school for five days to prevent further spread.
In many cases, doctors may also prescribe antibiotics for the entire family. If you have concerns about your child experiencing a prolonged cough, please do not hesitate to reach out to me via phone, text, or email (541-654-9713). I am more than willing to come to your school to examine and discuss any concerns with you. Please see the information sheet below for additional details.
Sincerely,
Suzie McCall, RN
