Weekly Community Updates - August 30, 2024
This week, we had a student driven futsol competition between classes. The games were so exciting to watch! Congrats to the seniors for winning!
As we end August, this is a great time for families to log into ParentVue to check your student's grades. If you have any questions, you can reach out to a counselor or your student's teachers. As a reminder, we have our Back to School Night later than other schools because our freshmen are preparing their Freshmen Orientation Project. Freshmen are interviewing staff members and learning about Oceana. Ask you freshmen who they interviewed and what they learned!
I hope everyone has a great three day weekend! We look forward to seeing students back next week refreshed.
Take care,
Maritza Torres
Rock Band Course
Oceana is starting an Elective Band class, where students get to learn, practice, and put on performances as part of the school’s rock band. For the enrollment process, we prioritized students who expressed interest in the Course Request Forms last Spring. After an initial round of enrollment, we currently still have room for students to join this class. So, if you are interested in committing your student to this class, please read the information below and fill out the form at the end of this email.
Currently, the space available are:
9th graders: 2 spots available
10th grader: 6 spots available
11th grader: 6 spots available
12th grader: 1 spot available
If the interest exceeds the number of spots available, a lottery will be held for each class.
Before you decide to commit your student to this course, it is important that you understand the following:
Being in the class means showing up every Thursday after school from 3:15 pm - 5:30 pm.
The class will also put on performances outside of their meet time. More information will come from the teacher.
Students will receive 3.5 credits for every semester completed, totaling 7 credits.
Please note that Rock Band is not UC approved, so Elective Band credits will not be counted towards college applications.
Because the VAPA requirement for graduation is 10 credits, taking a year of this course will not fulfill the VAPA graduation requirement by itself. This course is not 10 credits because the total time that the class meets does not equal to the total for a year long 10 credit course.
The start date for the class is Thursday, September 5.
Please fill out this Elective Band Course Request Form by 3pm, Tuesday September 3 to commit to being a part of this after school Elective Band Class, agreeing to the above agreements.
Make Up Pictures! (again)
Due to our blackout on Thursday, Lifetouch is coming back on Thursday September 19th for the final day of make up pictures. If you are interested in ordering pictures, log onto mylifetouch.com and use your student ID to order pictures.
