Weekly Newsletter
May 15, 2024
This is the last newsletter for the 23-24 school year! This year has been an eventful one for sure! As a school community we've navigated transportation challenges, new start/end times, another new start/end time 🤪, new staff, and more. Through every challenge, we maintained our focus on student support and achievement, and for that, I am truly thankful for the community we've built and maintained. Even with facing difficulties, we've created a wonderful place for our students, staff, and families and we have much to celebrate! Thank you for continuting to trust me with your students and providing me the opportunity to lead this amazing school!
This weekend holds exciting events for our students: Lemonade Day, soccer tournaments, and Girls on the Run final 5K race. Next week, we have field trips, end of the year activities, and our fifth grade promotion ceremony. What exciting opportunities for our students!
We finised our KSA testing for third, fourth, and fifth graders! We continue to do a few student make-ups. This is a huge accomplishment for our students. We do not receive scores until October and will share more information in the fall.
We wish the best of luck to our fifth graders as they make the transition to sixth grade!
Have a wonderful last week of school and great summer!

Important Information
New Start/End Times and CEP
A continued reminder for next school year's new start/end times: Hawthorne will have a NEW START/END TIME. Our school day will be from 8:40-3:20. Our doors will open at 8:10 and close at 3:50. If you need extended care before or after school, you need to sign up for CEP (Child Enrichment Program). This is sponsored through the YMCA but Hawthorne has a location. Registration will be open tomorrow (Thursday, May 16) at 10:00. More information can be found HERE.
With this new information, we are working on details regarding building hours, extracurricular schedules, and carpool. ALL families, unless your student rides special needs transportation, will NOT have transportation next school year.
Thank you to everyone who completed the JCPS survey. It's been extended until tomorrow (Thursday, May 16). It's VERY IMPORTANT that ALL families complete this for EACH student. This indicates your choice to return to Hawthorne and your ability to provide transportation.
We recognize and understand that this is another change for our school and district and directly impacts students, staff, and families. We are in this together and will navigate these changes as they come. We truly appreciate your patience and support!
24-25 JCPS School Calendar
Next year's calendar is available! There are some new changes (students start school on a Thursday!), so please review and make notes!
LAST CALL! Nurse Stacy- Notes of Appreciation
It is with mixed emotions that I announce Nurse Stacy's retirement at the end of this school year. She's been an integral part of our school community for many, many years and her absence will truly be felt.
We would love to celebrate her time here with notes or drawings of appreciation. If interested in contributing, please bring all drawings or notes to the main office by Friday, May 17. We will collect these and add them to an engraved box.
We need your help collecting library books!
It's time to collect library books! Please search your house and encourage your students to check their lockers and classrooms for missing library books.
There is a book return located in the main hallway for students to drop in their books.
We will continue to collect until the last day of school!
Spring Fiesta and Lemonade Day: Friday, May 17- UPDATES!
Please join us for our Spring Fiesta! This is a great time to support our fourth graders and their lemonade day stands, and celebrate the end of the school year with friends and family. Due to the forcasted inclement weather, we will host the Lemonade stands in the gym and have the cafeteria open for a picnic area.
We are also shortening the evening: 6:00-7:00 pm. We look forward to seeing you and having you support our fourth graders and their lemonade!
Quail Project Celebration
Blackacre is very excited to host a Quail Project Celebration this Saturday, May 18! We’ve changed the name from Quail Release Party to Quail Project Celebration, because we won’t be releasing the birds quite yet. They need more time in the flight pen to grow and practice flying. Also, the native grasses that will provide them cover and protection from predators in the Oak Savanna will be thicker and taller in late June. We want to give them their best chance to survive and thrive, so we are delaying the actual release.
We will still gather to celebrate the project this Saturday, and families will have a chance to see the quail in their flight pen and walk the beautiful oak savanna where they will be released over the summer!
We hope you can join us for this family fun event at Blackacre!
Girls on the Run--Season End 5K Celebration
Confidence through Accomplishment
Each season comes to an end with a celebratory 5K. This closing event gives program participants of all abilities a tangible sense of accomplishment. Crossing the finish line instills confidence through completion and is a joyful moment program participants always remember! Everyone in our program receives a commemorative medal to celebrate this incredible achievement.

KDE Reading Grant Awarded!
The Kentucky Department of Education is pleased to announce the completion of the review process for the FY24 Reading Diagnostic Fund (RDIG) RFA and Hawthorne was awarded this grant!
Ms. Minteer and Ms. Haynes submitted a grant for two years of Lexia with professional development opportunities. We also included Lexia English Language Development for bilingual students. JCPS recently announced that Lexia will be provided to all JCPS elementary schools. Since we received the grant, we will have an additional year added- so three full years of Lexia without the cost!!
This is AMAZING news for our students! Lexia provides science of reading-based solutions that support every student and educator.
Spring MAP Data
Our staff and students have made HUGE progress on our MAP reading and math assessments! We are incredibly proud of this student achievement and growth.
This assessment is given three times a year (Fall, Winter, and Spring). The data was shared in the May SBDM meeting. As a school, we focus on next steps and ensuring our core instruction and intervention plans are strong.
HERE is the updated data. Your student will receive his/her individual scores with report cards. Please reach out to Ms. Haynes with any questions.
Report Cards
Students will come home with report cards on the last day of school: Friday, May 24!
Navigating the JCPS Website!
TIPS FOR FINDING WHAT YOU NEED | JCPS launched a beautiful new website last month! You may have noticed that when you search for things located on JCPS' website via Google or other search engines, the top results sometimes lead to broken links.
For best results finding what you need, please visit the JCPS website and click on the magnifying glass in the top right-hand corner to search our website directly rather than going through a search engine. Thank you for your patience as we continue working through the new website transition!
Quail Cams!
We are so excited for round #2 of baby quails! Some of our Round 2 Blackacre quail chicks have surprised us with an earlier-than-expected arrival! Maybe they were inspired by the competitive fervor of the Kentucky Derby, or they wanted to celebrate Cinco de Mayo, or they wanted to hurry up and hatch so they could wish our 3rd-5th graders good luck on KSA! 🎉
Here are the Google Meet links for our Hawthorne Quail Cams if you’d like to take a peek at the peepers:

Staff Retirements!
It's bittersweet to announce several staff retirements at the end of this school year: Nurse Stacy, Dr. Herdelin (librarian), Ms. Johnson (Instructional Assistant), and Ms. Eskew (Kindergarten Assistant).
All of these women are amazing and will leave giant holes in their place at Hawthorne. We are so sad to lose them, but excited for their next adventures!

💡 Reminders
The Bloom/Hawthorne Family Resource Center's (BFHRC) mission is to promote the flow of services, resources, and supports to families in ways that strengthen their functioning and help build a bridge between the school, home, and community. We work together with students and their families to help enhance the growth and development of individual members and the family unit as they learn to shape the social and environmental forces that affect their daily lives. We believe that by helping to remove barriers that interfere with learning, we can help our students achieve and succeed, becoming productive members of society.
