Happy October!
Today students had popcorn Friday, and Ms. Ingwersen's class earned the Spirit Award for most participation today! On Monday our September Student of the Month winners were announced. Congratulations to these outstanding Portal Stars, who were nominated by their teachers. All students work hard each and every day, these students were recognized as someone who consistently show their best, are safe, respectful and responsible in all areas of the building.
I look forward to seeing each of you at Parent Teacher Conferences next week. Enjoy the weekend!

Parent Teacher Conferences
Donations for Conferences
The Portal PTO provides a meal for teachers each night of Parent-Teacher Conferences. We need volunteers to donate snacks and drinks to accompany the meals. Please review the available items in the link and click the button to sign up.
Please drop off non-perishable items (labeled PTO Conference Meals) to the front office by Friday, October 4. The fruit and vegetable items should be dropped off on Tuesday, October 8th, to ensure they remain fresh.

Lots of Visitors and Fun This Week!
Rose Theater Visits 4th Grade
On Wednesday, students got to help solve Case #98, the Case of the Closed Coin Purse, by paying close attention & taking great notes!
Art Club
Students from Art Club brightened up the sidewalk this week leading to the front doors!
Fontenelle Forest
3rd Grade finished a unit on animal classifications and finished with a wonderful surprise from Fontenelle Forest! They got to see an owl, snake and turtle!

Trunk or Treat 2024
Come have a Spooky Good Time as Portal Elementary PTO Presents…Trunk or Treat 2024 for Portal Elementary Students and their Families.
· Friday, October 18th, from 6-7:30 p.m.
· Students and families can dress up in their Halloween costumes and visit the Portal school parking lot where volunteers will have treats available from the trunks of their vehicles.
· All students should be accompanied by an adult.
· Parents/Grandparents/Guardians/Friends please decorate your vehicle! Each vehicle will be responsible for providing their own decorations and giveaways (e.g. pre-packaged food, candy, prizes, etc.). Check-in and vehicle set-up will begin at 5:30 p.m. and must be finished by 6 p.m. Vehicles will need to remain in place until closing time at 7:30 p.m.
· Candy/Goodie donations can be “fed” into the monster located by the front office during school hours. This inventory is used when vehicles are running low on giveaways.

Musical Notes
Check out what's going on in music class by joining the "Portal Music Stars" FB Group.
Throughout the school year, this private group is where you will find videos and pictures highlighting what is happening in music class. It is an opportunity for us to informally perform, celebrate learning, and also a good conversation starter for you at home!

Music Performances: Every student will have the chance to perform at least once this year. Formal evening programs are planned for grades 1, 2, 4, and 5, while informal performances will be held for grades K, 3, and 6. These informal performances may be combined with other school events and/or involve multiple grade levels, giving all students a comprehensive musical experience.

It's Book Fair Time!
Come to the Scholastic Book Fair!
Until October 10, every purchase benefits our school and allows us to purchase new books for the library. The book fair will be open during the day for students only, parents & children may shop together at parent teacher conferences from 3:30 - 7:30pm. Online shopping is also available!

Lunch
We are utilizing a Sign-Up Genius for lunch visitors. If there is more than one visitor in your group, each visitor must be signed up for a slot. Slots are listed as 11:40am - 1:10pm, but please come during your children's lunch time.
Visitors may bring lunch or purchase lunch at school (if you want to purchase lunch at school, it must be called in to the front office no later than 8:45am). If you are purchasing school lunch, please bring exact change, $4.80. If you have any questions, please call Carrie Evert at 402-898-0425.
