What Does The Fox Say?
February 27, 2025
Dear Parent/Guardian,
During winter break, I read a book for fun. It’s been years since I’ve read a book for fun. I know, it’s terrible. I love reading! I was that kid that would read under the blanket with a flashlight instead of going to bed. The last book I read was We Were Dreamers by Simu Liu (the actor from Shang-Chi, Barbie, Kim’s Convenience). Most of the book is about his life growing up, the push and pull of parental expectations, being the child of immigrant parents, and eventually being offered the role in Shang-Chi ← breaking so many barriers in doing so. The book I recently read was Educated, a memoir by Tara Westover. I know, I know… If you are an avid reader then yes, I am behind the times. I read the book in three days. I kept yelling out, “This can’t be real!” My poor husband kindly acknowledged me when I gave a brief synopsis of my bewilderment and disbelief with the turn of every few pages. How so much trauma and unbelievable incidents can happen to one person/family is shocking. In brief, this girl grew up kept away from a formal education. She was uninformed and unaware. She struggled and struggled but stepped up to learn on her own, had people along the way who supported her personal and intellectual growth, and came out on the other side. It’s grit in a way we have long stopped talking about. I’m mad at myself for not reading more. I have definitely put off reading a work related book, The PD Book by Elena Aguilar. She is fantastic but I just kinda don’t want to - sooo much work. The Whole Child Team will engage in a book study on this shortly so I will get it together soon. My next just-for-me book is Our Missing Hearts by Celeste Ng or The Life Impossible by Matt Haig. But not gonna lie, I am going to have to watch the new season of Reacher before I pick up a book again.
